5 The Evolution of Radio Radio didn't’t begin until World War I, it was created as a reliable source to communicate between ships in the United States and Britain. Fact: Guglielmo Marconi successfully sent the first radio message across the Atlantic Ocean in December 1901 from England to Newfoundland. Marconi's radio did not receive voice or music. Rather, it received buzzing sounds created by a spark gap transmitter sending a signal using Morse code. Radio caught on faster in Britain than it did in the U.S. Due to the devastation brought on by the war, Britain needed a way for its citizens to take their minds off their problems and radio provided the perfect release. Radio was used to transmit news, plays, music and discussion to people all over the United Kingdom and when word of radio's popularity spread to the United States, the country followed a similar path of broadcasting.
