3 II. W HAT ARE POSITIVE CHOICES FOR LIVING HEALTHY ? A. 8 – 10 hours of sleep each night. B. Starting each day with a healthy breakfast. C. Eating a variety of nutritious foods. D. Maintaining a healthy weight. E. Avoiding tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. F. Abstaining from sexual activities before marriage. G. Managing stress. H. Maintaining positive relationships. I. 4 III. P REVENTION AND E DUCATION A. Definitions: 1. Prevention; practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. 2. Health Education; providing accurate information to help people make healthy choices. 3. Healthy Literacy; a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote one’s wellness. PRHS Physical Education Department

5 IV. H EALTHY P EOPLE 2010 A. This is a book that comes out every 10 years to help the nation become healthier. 1. 2 Goals a. To increase quality and years of life for all Americans. b. To remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location. 2. Individuals, Families, Communities are all responsible to help reach these goals. 3. How can you help? What goals can you make as an individual, with your family, in your community? Culture: the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. D. Attitude: the way you view situations. E. Behavior: the actions you take. F. Media: the various methods of communicating info.
