4 Lead Local Flood Authority The Council as the highway authority are responsible for the maintenance of highway drainage systems including cleaning gullies. Approval and adoption of Highways drainage systems Strategic Flood Risk Assessment – To avoid development in flood risk areas Sustainable Urban Drainage Approval Body – The Council must establish once the commencement of the national standards is undertaken.

6 Response South Tyneside declared incident –28 th June –5 th August –24 th September Major incident response team called to Barrington Street: –Corporate Directors –Trained emergency response staff –Social Care and Health –Other Key Council staff –Northumbria Police

9 Response and Recovery Since 29 June Borough Wide Clean up On-site support to residents, households and businesses Pick up’s arranged for damaged household goods with advice re insurers Gully Cleaning and liaison with Northumbria Water Response Team in place for further Weather alerts –Detailed plan for flood risk areas shared –Risk Zones –Staff rota –Equipment in key locations –Partnership approach
