What Is Core Maths?

WHAT IS CORE MATHS? ▪ A new Level 3 course for students in post 16 education who have passed GCSE Mathematics at grade C and above but have decided not to study A Level Mathematics ▪ Introduced by the Department of Education in September 2014, it forms part of the Government’s plan to increase participation and raise standards in mathematics education (Only 20% of students study mathematics beyond GCSE in the UK – in Japan this figure is 85%) ▪ Designed in association with employers, universities and professional bodies as valuable preparation for employment and further studies ▪ Same UCAS points as an AS Level

Skills Learned

SKILLS LEARNED ▪ Personal contexts e.g. budgeting household finances, tax return computations, working out interest payments on loans and savings ▪ Occupational contexts e.g. analysing and evaluating data, financial calculations, modelling ▪ Societal contexts e.g. probability and estimation calculations relating to local or global communities ▪ Scientific contexts e.g. sequences and growth scenarios related to the natural world, science and technology Students learn through using and applying mathematics to solve meaningful and ‘real life’ problems including:

Business Related Skills

BUSINESS RELATED SKILLS The course covers ▪ Statistics and algebra ▪ Probability and estimation ▪ Data analysis and modelling ▪ Sequences and growth ▪ Financial planning and management ▪ Collaborative problem solving approaches and techniques ▪ Using technology and spreadsheets The course equips students with skills and confidence to tackle everyday demands they are likely to encounter in their working lives.

Teaching Approaches

TEACHING APPROACHES ▪ Core Maths builds on and extends GCSE Mathematics with a sharper focus on problem solving skills ▪ The skills taught support mathematical knowledge required in other studies such as psychology, health sciences, geography, sociology, history and music ▪ The course is led by mathematics teachers and the involvement of other subject experts is encouraged to bring the application of mathematics to life

The Core Maths Advantage

THE CORE MATHS ADVANTAGE ▪ Be better prepared for higher education and employment ▪ Apply mathematical reasoning to solve real life problems ▪ Make sense of data ▪ Confidently deal with everyday financial matters ▪ Retain, deepen and extend their mathematics

Benefits for Schools & Colleges

BENEFITS FOR SCHOOLS & COLLEGES ▪ Students currently studying Core Maths have found it gives them confidence to better understand the mathematical requirements in other A Level and BTEC courses ▪ Leading universities have endorsed the qualification as it equips students with the mathematics skills required for many degree courses from humanities to health sciences ▪ Students will be in a position to apply the enhanced skills they have learned in business and financial contexts ▪ Many schools and colleges are finding the broadening of the teaching approach to include other subject experts beneficial in supporting capacity challenges

Where Is Core Maths Taught?

WHERE IS CORE MATHS TAUGHT? ▪ The two year qualification was launched in September 2014 amongst a cohort of ‘early adopter’ schools and colleges ▪ The Department of Education decided to make it available to all post 16 providers in England in September 2015

Endorsements

“I like Core Maths because it’s relevant…I feel challenged. It’s a good qualification to have.” Core Maths Student “The real life maths skills students learn on the new Core Maths qualification will benefit not only their future employers but give the students and apprentices confidence to tackle and solve problems in their everyday lives too.” Lindsay McCurdy, CEO Apprenticeships4Englanda “Core Maths is the single most important initiative in post-16 mathematics in a generation.” Professor Paul Glaister, Reading University

“The new Core Maths qualification is an excellent way to ensure British employers have a ready pipeline of young talent with the maths skills they need” Dame Fiona Kendrick, Chairman & CEO Nestle UK & Ireland.” “ Being able to develop my practice as a teacher, especially with regard to teaching problem solving, this is starting to change how I teach other maths classes.” Core Maths Teacher
