2
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre What is Further Mathematics? is an AS/A level qualification is designed to be studied alongside the standard Maths AS/A levels has content which is both broader and deeper than the standard Maths A level carries UCAS points in exactly the same way as other AS/A levels Further Maths:

3
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre Why do Further Mathematics? help your understanding of the standard Maths A level and possibly increase your standard Maths grade Studying Further Maths will: make you think! (and so develop your thinking skills) give you the chance to meet some interesting and very useful Mathematical ideas not covered on the standard Maths A level help you to succeed on any Maths-related degree course

4
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre you enjoy Mathematics and are keen to learn and understand more you intend to do a degree in a maths- based subject like: Any form of Engineering Sciences (especially Physics) If you have the chance, you would be foolish not to do Further Mathematics if : Computing Mathematics

5
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre What modules are studied for the AS level? At the Keele and Potteries Further Mathematics Centre you will study: Decision Maths Further Pure 1 Numerical Methods and these build straight on your GSCE mathematics – you don’t need to know any other mathematics MEI syllabus

6
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre Decision Maths Decision Mathematics Typical problems include finding the shortest route by road from one city to another or the cheapest way of laying telephone cables to connect towns. We will meet a range of methods for tackling such problems. Example

7
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre Further Pure 1 Matrices 20 0 2 ( )

8
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre Further Pure 1 Complex numbers

9
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre Numerical Methods Numerical Methods In this module we will study algorithms for solving problems in continuous mathematics (as distinguished from discrete mathematics). Many of these problems arise from the calculus you will be studying in your core A-Level modules. As such this module will not only introduce you to a different style of mathematics but will also reinforce, and improve your understanding of, material in your A-Level.

10
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre What topics are studied? Pure Maths topics developed further from the standard A level include: FunctionsAlgebra Calculus Differential Equations

11
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre What topics are studied? In Applied Maths you can develop the applied topics from your standard Maths A level to a higher level, or broaden your knowledge into different topics StatisticsMechanics Decision & Discrete Maths Applied Maths modules may be studied in: Numerical Analysis

12
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre How are the AS and A level qualifications made up? You need 3 modules for an AS in Further Maths, one of which must be Further Pure Maths 1, so we add Decision 1 and Numerical Methods You need 3 more for the A-level in Further Maths, one of which must be Further Pure Maths 2

13
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre Your studies will be managed by a tutor How will studying through the Further Mathematics Centre work? You will use resources on an extensive, purpose-written website You will learn to make effective use of your textbook A lot more of of your studying will be done independently

14
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre How will I work with my Further Mathematics tutor 1? Lessons will be taught at Keele University by Dave Miller and David Bedford 2 hours teaching time, simple refreshments available before and part way through sessions We provide texts, all the work, organise your study, and track your progress so that we can keep the school informed of your progress and write reports for parents

15
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre How will I work with my Further Mathematics tutor 2? Our sessions will involve teaching You do examples elsewhere (2-3 hours plus your normal school time for homework) We will set you tasks between our sessions We expect you to be active participants and to enjoy the work – as well as find it a challenge We will use interactive whiteboards and software to help our teaching and your learning

16
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre What are the benefits of this style of studying? develop your ability to work more independently This style of studying will: provide excellent preparation for university style working demonstrate your initiative and commitment to universities and employers

17
Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre What are the on-line resources like?
