Martin Luther King JR. Day is an American national holiday which is celebrated on the third Monday of January. Its celebration is devoted to the famous fighter for human rights Martin Luther King.

Martin Luther King began his career as a civil rights activist in 1955. He led struggle against segregation, helped to organize nonviolent protests and marches. His main idea was to protect human rights.

Martin Luther King is considered to be one of the greatest orators in American history. “…I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self- evident: that all men are created equal…”

In October 1964 Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Medal after his death.

History Martin Luther King was killed in April 4, 1968 and 4 days later John Conyers (the House of Representatives in Congress) suggested a bill to make Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday. For several years it wasn’t taken into consideration.

HISTORY  The bill came to a vote in the House of Representatives only in 1979 but it was delayed. Some opponents criticized it for large costs.  The idea of establishing the national holiday was supported by the public.  The famous Negro singer Steve Wonder wrote a song “Happy Birthday” to support the establishing Martin Luther King’s Day.  The song made millions of Americans aware of the campaign. Six millions people signed the petition to support it.

Only in 1983 it was signed by the American President R. Reagan. The first celebration of the holiday took place in January 20, 1986.

THE CELEBRATION Martin Luther King’s Day is a day to promote equal rights for all American regardless of their skin color or background.
