2 The History of Save the Children  Eglantyne Jebb and her sister Dorothy Buxton began Save the Children in 1919 in response to the devastating effect of World War 1 on children  They raise money to provide relief to children suffering the effects of war  In the 1920s Eglantyne Jebb wanted the world to take children’s rights seriously  She wrote the 'Declaration of the Rights of the Child' which was later used to create the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

3 The Issues it Deals with  Save the Children focus on achieving four core rights for children:  Health  Freedom from hunger  Education  Protection

4 How it addresses such issues  Campaigns – raising Awareness and raising funds to tackle child poverty and hunger  Lobbying – talking to governments to influence decisions regarding children’s rights and education  Responding to natural disasters and war  Tackling deficiencies in health care around the world to prevent childhood illnesses and deaths  Ensuring that children around the world have a voice

5 What can the individual, society and government do?  Individual – Campaigning; fundraising; donating; volunteering at a local Save the Children shop  Society – Shop at a local Save the Children shop; campaign; protest; fundraise; companies can support Save the Children by sponsoring them or being committed to raising money for them for a period of time  Government – Can encourage people to support NGOs; can raise awareness of injustices in other countries; ensure that the rights of every child are protected in their country and that Save the Children are supported in their work nationally and globally

6 Current Campaigns Afghanistan emergency  Save the Children have been working in Afghanistan since 1976. Children are dealing with war and no education. Chile earthquake  Following the recent earthquake in Concepcion Save the Children have been working to protect children in Chile. Haiti earthquake  Following the recent earthquake Save the Children have been working to protect children in Haiti.

7 Current Campaigns East Africa  Save the Children work in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya to protect children from starvation, drought and disease. Gaza conflict  Due to war in Gaza many children are facing starvation, lack of water and a severe shortage in healthcare. Save the Children are working there to help these children.

8 The Effectiveness of Save the Children  Save the Children are saving the lives of thousands of children around the world  They raise awareness of the difficulties faced by children and give them a voice  They campaign to make sure that the rights of children are not violated  They protect children who cannot fend for themselves in times of war and natural disaster
