3 why is police procedure important for inpatient Mental health & Learning disabilities services? Equipped to safeguard and protect people experiencing mental distress and those around them mental health awareness partnership working for best practice knowledge of local mental health services

4 Six Day Course All student police officers from April 2009 receive 2 days training in First Aid in Mental Health (recommended by MIND & WAG) All student police officers attend the Acute Psychiatric Unit attached to their Base Command Unit for 4 days. They become personally involved in the care of people suffering mental health problems. Student officers are introduced to: Patients Community Mental Health Teams Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams Assertive Outreach Teams Social Services Teams all of the Multi-disciplinary teams working on Acute Adult MH Unit Voluntary sector

5 One Day Course ● Definitions used in psychiatry ● Common mental illnesses ● MDF - The Bipolar Organisation ● Hearing voices exercise ● Mental Health First Aid ● Information Sharing policy

6 Participants ● Student Police Officers ● PCSOs ● Custody Sergeants ● Firearms gold, silver and bronze commanders ● Firearms officers ● Police Negotiators ● IPCC ● Solicitors

7 Feedback - Patients Patient group have welcomed this initiative and believe that there is a positive change in attitude by the police officers who have undergone training. A comment from a very ill lady when brought into hospital was “I called the police to help me get rid of the Germans from my flat last week and it was the first time they did not handcuff me”. This was fed back to DPP who stated that the officers involved in the incident had been through our training.

9 Developments It is thought to be the only scheme of its type in the UK The Lord Bradley Report in April 2009, recommended that community support officers and police officers should link with local mental health services to develop joint training packages for mental health awareness

10 Awards Hywel Dda Health Board, working in conjunction with Dyfed Powys Police, the programme was given a special Judge’s Award recently at the MediWales Innovation Awards, which celebrate achievement in health technology sectors in Wales.

11 Awards Best Nurse-Led Project Award at the Annual Mental Health and Learning Disability Awards for Wales in 2008/09.

12 Recognition Many organisations have cited the West Wales programme as evidence of best practice, including the Police Foundation, Independent Police Complaints Commission, and national MIND charity. Enquires have also been received from across the UK and as far as Canada and Ireland.
