2 HCW’s in therapeutic services use a variety of treatments to help pts. who are injured, physically or mentally disabled.

3 Places of employment Rehab facilities Hospitals Daycare facilities LTC facilities Schools Home health care

4 LEVELS Most therapeutic occupations include the levels of therapist, technician, and assistant /aide.

5 Occupational Therapist OT Licensure required in all states Bachelor’s or master’s Help pts. overcome disabilities and perform ADL’s.

6 Occupational Therapy Assistant OTA Associate’s degree or HOE certificate program Work under the direction of the OT Assist pts. with plans to master their ADL’s.

7 Pharmacist Bachelor’s or PharmD plus internship. Dispense meds. on the written order of a MD, dentist and other HCP’s. Give advice on OTC meds. and make sure all are compatible. How many years? = Bachelors plus internship.

8 Pharmacy Technician Works under the supervision of the pharmacist Label medications Destroy out of date meds. Help maintain records

9 Physical Therapist PT Administer heat and cold tx. Provide tx. to improve movement of joints Provide massages

10 Physical Therapy Assistant PTA Work under the direction of the PT Help carry out prescribed treatment plans. Assist pts. to use ambulation devices

11 Massage Therapist Work under the direction of the MD or PT 3month –1year accredited program Use many variations of massage Relieve stress and tension

12 Recreation Therapist Use recreational activities as forms of tx. Organize activities like athletic events, dances, or the use of arts and crafts

13 Respiratory Therapist RT’s Work under the MD Treat pts. with heart and lung disease Perform diagnostic test Administer O 2 and breathing tx’s

14 Speech pathologist Master’s degree plus an internship Treat pts. with speech impairments

15 Athletic Trainer Bachelor’s or master’s degree Prevent and treat athletic injuries Over-see physical conditioning program for athletes.

16 Perfusionist Work as a member of an open- heart surgical team. Operate the heart-lung machine that is used during this procedure.
