7 TP-CASTT is an ACRONYM for… T itle P araphrase C onnotation A ttitude S hift T itle T heme It is a method to help us understand, appreciate, and communicate about poetry and the power of words. 7

8 T is for TITLE ◦Analyze the title first. ◦What do you predict this poem will be about?

9 READ THE POEM!!!!

10 P is for PARAPHRASE ◦Paraphrasing is putting something in your own words. ◦After reading the poem, rewrite it in your own words. ◦This may be three sentences or a page, depending on the particular poem.

11 C is for CONNOTATION ◦Analyze the figures of speech and sound effects of the poem. ◦These are the poetry vocabulary we have already studied. ◦These elements add to the meaning.

12 A is for ATTITUDE ◦Tone is the attitude of the speaker toward the subject of the poem.

13 S is for SHIFT ◦If there is a change in… ◦Time ◦Tone ◦Speaker This should always be noted as this will also affect the meaning.

14 T is for TITLE (again) ◦At this time, you should reconsider the title. ◦Were you right in your predictions? ◦What other meanings might the title have in light of your analysis?

15 T is for THEME ◦As you already know, theme is the general insight into life conveyed by the author through his/her work. ◦To find the theme: ◦Look at the other parts of TPCASTT. ◦What insight are all of these working together to convey? ◦What is the poet trying to say about life?

16 Assignment ◦As a class, we will complete a TPCASST of Billy Collin’s poem, “Introduction to Poetry”. After wards, you will independently complete your own TPCASTT of Nikki Giovanni’s “Kidnap Poem”.

17 Exit Ticket ◦What does Collins and Giovanni think the purpose of poetry is? ◦CWPA Grade: 5 points

18 Homework ◦Bring a printed copy of your favorite poem. Be prepared to do a dramatic reading (recitation) in front of the class.

23 Objective ◦SWBAT Construct a poem using either Introductory Adverbs or Introductory Prepositional Phrases.

24 Assignment ◦Review the model assignment. ◦Observe how each poem is created. ◦Choose which skill you want to use. (Introductory Adverbs or Prepositional Phrases. ◦Use the model poems as a guide to create your own poem. ◦Be prepared to share!

27 Objectives ◦SWBAT Explain the meaning of Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken. ◦SWBAT Create a poem that reflects an alternate outcome of a regretted decision. CRS: ARG 603

28 Robert Frost ◦American Poet (March 26, 1874, January 29, 1963. ◦Dramatic writer, who targets real life situations. ◦Critics argue that his work is very honest and serious. ◦"Frost's best work explores fundamental questions of existence, depicting with chilling starkness the loneliness of the individual in an indifferent universe."

29 “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost ◦Complete a TPCASTT of the poem. ◦We will discuss what this poem means afterwards.

30 Next… ◦Now complete the questions at the bottom of your handout. ◦Ultimately, you will create a poem that reflects the alternate outcome of a decision you made, but regret.

32 Friday, May 13, 2016 ◦Take out your poem! ◦We will do a Round Robin.

33 Round Robin ◦Imagine that you are in a circle with your groups. ◦Pass your poem to each other going clockwise. ◦Make sure to read each person’s poem. ◦Tell them something positive about their poem.

34 Objective ◦SWBAT Analyze a peer’s poem using TPCASST ◦CRS: CLR 602, ARG 603

35 Assignment ◦Now that you have read different poems from your peers. Select a poem you really liked and use TPCASST to really analyze its meaning.

36 Homework ◦Read a new poem over the weekend!
