Jesus Baptism

IT happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. (MK 1:9-11)

Baptized by John the Baptist Each of the four Gospels uses Jesus’ baptism as a starting point of his ministry.

John the Baptist Preached to share their clothing and food with the poor. Told tax collectors to only collect what they were supposed to collect Told Soldiers to be gentle with people aand to be content with their salary Condemned behavior of King Herod Antipas for marrying his own brothers wife.

John vs. Elijah Gospel writers compared John the Baptist to Elijah from the Old Testament – Garment of Camel Hair – Leather belt – Ate Grasshoppers and – Wild Honey – Last OT “Prophet?”

John the Jewish Connection Messiah? John baptized in the Jordan River = Jewish freedom! – Entry point into the promise land after the forty years of penance and suffering in the desert. John’s followers showed their willingness to become like their ancient ancestors. (Turn from Sin and find God’s Words

Jesus Baptism Drawn to the River Jordan by the Holy Spirit Connected with the people because he too was immersed in the water just as the sinners were doing. – Shows his Humility – Role of a Suffering Servant

4 Baptism Stories Each of the Gospel Accounts of Jesus’ Baptism notes that the role of the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus in the form of a dove and the heavenly voice that proclaims Jesus to be the Son of God. – Three Phenomenon's describe Jesus – 1. Opening of the Sky – 2. Descent of the Spiriit in dove form – 3. Heavenly Voice

ALL AGREE ON The opening of the sky represents that God has come to his people in Jesus. His mission is about to begin.

ALL AGREE ON The dove is a symbol of joy, innocence, freedom, power, and peace all combined into one rich image. We are at the dawn of a new age (Noah) New era will be under the influence and direction of the Holy Spirit

ALL AGREE ON The voice proclaiming “You are my beloved Son” (Mk 1:11) connects with the two Old Testament prophesies: – Promises of the coming of the anointed king – The suffering Servant (from the prophet Isaiah)

So Why did JESUS get Baptized To show perfect submission to the Father’s will To foreshadow the baptism of his death for the remission of our sins To serve as a model for our own baptism. So the Lord’s work can continue through his followers.
