5. WHAT IS AN ELLIPSE? An ellipse is the set of all points in a plane whose sum of the distance from the foci (our thumbtacks) to any point on the ellipse is constant. The major axis and the minor axis are perpendicular to each other. The major axis is the one that goes through the foci and whose endpoints connect the vertices.

COOPERATIVE LEARNING ACTIVITY Groups of 3 Send one group member up to take a set of cards and an ellipse identification sheet (hold on to the paper clip so you can re-attach the cards when we are finished) Each group should fill in their ellipse identification sheet for each equation that they are given (there are 3 different equations)

12. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE Ex.3 – Find the equation of the ellipse with its center at (0,0), vertex at (-9,0) and minor axis 6 units long.
