6 I. GEOGRAPHY: Location & Place A.City of Rome 1. on Italian Peninsula 2. Alps mountains in north 3. centrally located in Mediterranean Basin  able to extend influence over entire area 4. distant from eastern Mediterranean powers B. PROSCONS

7 C. History of Spread 1. by 700s BCE – controlled area around Rome 2. by 200s BCE – dominated most of Italian Peninsula 3. by 100s BCE – Roman Empire spanned Spain, North Africa, Greece, Asia Minor and Egypt 4. by 100s CE – Roman Empire had territory from Scotland to Persia

10 2. Romulus & Remus – Legendary founders of Rome; descendants of Aeneas, father is Mars, god of war; they were left to die & raised by a she-wolf; Romulus killed Remus during fight over 7 hills; Rome is named after him
