Working with Picture/Story Books The Wolves in the Walls Neil Gaiman

LO: I can describe a character’s feelings through their actions

Mimes with feeling Choose a partner. One person selects an action card and a feelings card. They perform the action and the partner has to guess the feeling behind the mime.

Change the mime into words… George barged through the classroom door, slamming it behind him. He stomped towards the cloakroom, yanking his bag behind him. He grabbed a chair, sat down and glared around the room. “What are you looking at?” he snapped. Lucy slipped into the room, closing the door quietly behind her. She walked slowly over to her table and slumped into her chair, resting her forehead on her hands. She stared at the grey carpet as if there was something really interesting down there. “Hello,” she whispered, without looking up. Can you find the verbs? Are there any adverbs? How are the character speaking? What do they tell you about the character?

Success Criteria  Use powerful verbs to show emotive action  Use adverbs to describe the actions  Put ‘said’ in jail
