2 WHAT IS IT TO BE ETHICAL … AND WHO CARES?  SOCIO-POLITICAL IMPACT  RELIGION  RACE  CIVIL RIGHTS  CIVIL LIBERTIES  HUMAN RIGHTS  DAY TO DAY LIFE  … WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

3 Where do you draw the line?  This is a key question asked many times throughout our meetings

4 WHAT DOES THE ETHICS CLUB DO?  Established to promote Ethical and Moral Critical Thinking across the OSU campus  Compete in the Annual Regional Ethics Bowl Tournament  Host an Annual Ethics Seminar  Host Monthly Faculty on Faculty Debates  Spring Campus-wide Ethics Bowl between different colleges.  Weekly OSU Ethics Club Meetings

5 Ethics Bowl competition??? …that’s a thing?? …They do that??  Asking questions is one of the key tools to developing as a person which is why its so crucial to analyze key issues seen throughout society.  The Annual Regional Business Ethics Tournament  Training and preparation will be provided to those interested.. (if need be a qualifying tournament will commence)  Analysis of cases provided by the organization  SIDE NOTE: Thinking of providing a group of cases ahead of time before each meeting so members can do research and come prepared to discuss the issue of their interest…  ….OR They can email officers and give us feedback on what interest them

6 Example: Pregnant women ought to receive pay while staying at home…  Key dilemmas  Small vs. Large companies  One can afford this fee and one might not be able to  Does the company have an obligation? (Morally or Legally)  Yes or No …. and why????  Allowance for abuse of freedom?  Deontology vs. Utilitarianism

7 Faculty debates (Under Construction…) Like most of campus… this is under construction… The Goal: to bring together members of opposing or similar fields of study to bring forth expert opinions in issues pertaining to different professions or issues Ex: International Relations and Philosophers who could argue for and against the Snowden Case Ex: Psychology and Sociology professors speak on issues violent video games Ex: Religion taught in public schools … The list could go on forever. **** Bring your ideas to the table **** we want to encourage you to bring ideas forward because this should be issues of interest to you as well as important for others to be aware of.

8 Spring: OSU ethics Bowl  The goal is to host a campus wide Ethics Bowl between the different Colleges for Undergraduate Study  Such as the College of Agriculture, College of Education, College of Arts and Science, etc.  Each College will put forth one or more teams to compete against each other to eventually reach a Campus Champion  Cases will be provided to all teams in advance  Rules and Regulations of the Regional Ethics Bowl Competition will apply as to promote and teach others about the competition

9 Fall: osu ethics seminar  This is the BIG EVENT for the OSU Ethics Club  Guest speakers will be asked to present different material pertaining to different areas of interest  Similar to faculty debates, each College will have a speaker representing their professional areas of study and the ethical issues within those professions.  Key Note Speaker: TBA  Tentative Date: October 25 th or November 8 th (Both Fridays)  Co-Host: Dr. Bird (VP Student Affairs)  Working with: Campus Life and leadership organizations such as PLC, RLC, RHA, and SGA

10 What can you do to help???  Bring forth ideas in meetings as to what events would be entertaining and educational to help promote ethics.  “To better ourselves is to make a better tomorrow” – someone important  (irony… ethical issue of not properly giving credit where credit is due)  IDEAS: WHAT WOULD YOU DO??? (OSU Campus Style)

11 How to join the OSU ethics club…  Sign in to campuslink.okstate.edu using O-Key email Address and Password  Click Organizations  Click on the “O”  Click on the 4 th page  Click OSU Ethics Club  Click request Membership  This will allow you to receive emails sent out when meetings are coming up and cases that will be talked about
