9 In Irony of situation, the result of an action is the reverse of what the actor expected. Dramatic irony, the audience knows something that the characters in the drama do not. For example, the identity of the murderer in a crime thriller may be known to the audience long before the mystery is solved. Verbal irony, the contrast is between the literal meaning of what is said and what is meant. A character may refer to a plan as brilliant, while actually meaning that (s)he thinks the plan is foolish. Sarcasm is a form of verbal irony http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lI1xEJxGEwY/SFaJosTaW1I/AAAAAAAAABI/DTZHCS5Haq8/S660/scarlet-letter-accountant-in- gif.png

20  In early colonial America, an unmarried woman enjoyed some of the same legal rights as men, but social customs required her to marry at an early age. After marriage, a woman lost her identity in the eyes of the law. She wasn't permitted to vote, and her access to education was very limited. Only a widow who didn't remarry was allowed to own property, conduct her own business, and retain her wages—a sad state of affairs. http://media.photobucket.com/image/Puritan%20Women/maggie6138/maggie2/ea sty2.jpg
