3. Allusion- a reference to a well-known person, place, thing or event that the writer assumes the reader is familiar with. Ex: Chipper Jones Is the king of baseball.

4. Flashback- a technique in which a writer interrupts a story to go back and explain an earlier time. Ex: Meet the Robinsons

5. Hyperbole- an extreme exaggeration or overstatement that a writer uses to emphasize. Ex: Your mom is as big as a house.

6. Foreshadowing- hints or clues that a writer uses to suggest what will happen next.

7. Palindrome- a word, phrase or sentence that has the exact same letters when spelled forward as it does backward. tattarrattat is 12 letters and the longest palindrome known by the Oxford English University. It is used as a sound word for a knock on the door.

8. idiom Idiom- words used in a unique way that is different from their literal meaning. ex: It’s raining cats and dogs.

9. Metaphor- a figure of speech that compares two things without using “ like” or “as”. That is a stronger comparison than a simile. Ex: he’s a snake in the grass.

11. simile- a figure of speech that compares two things using “like” or “as”. Ex: he was as cool as a cucumber.

12. Pun- a phrase that uses words in a way that gives them a humorous effect. They are often homonyms. Ex: the rabbit story is a real “hare” raiser.

13. An acronym is an abbreviation formed from the first letters or syllables of a group of words.

14. An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging the letters from another word or phrase, or perhaps from nonsense letters. Ex: “radar” comes from radio detection or raging.

15. . Alliteration- a writing technique that uses poetic device and keeps the same repeating consonant sound to keep the reader’s attention. Ex: little Lucy locket

16. Character traits- words used to indirectly describe the characters in the story. Ex: friendly, anger

17. Types of literature: -fiction: false, fake ex: beauty and the beast -non-fiction: real, true ex: ladder 49 -drama: play written to be acted out in front of an audience. Ex: the phantom of the opera. -myth: man’s earliest attempts to explain the unknown. Ex: the thunder and lightning -fantasy: imaginative story (could include talking animals or inanimate objects- such as trees or sponges. Ex: sponge bob -folk tales/legends: stories passed down from one generation to the next. Ex: Hercules

18. Author’s purpose: Inform- presents and explains facts. Entertain- includes characters and events (usually). Persuade- contains opinions that may or may not be supported by facts.
