2.8 Inverse of a Sum on Simplifying continued Goal: to simplify expressions involving parenthesis and to simplify with multiple grouping symbols

Multiple Grouping Symbols Parenthesis ( ) Brackets [ ] Braces { } Computations in the innermost grouping symbols should be done first.

Remember Order of Operations Parenthesis first (if more then one set of ( ) or [ ] or { } do the inner most grouping symbol first and work your way out) Exponents Adding and Subtracting from left to right Multiplying and Dividing from left to right

Simplify: [3 – ( 7 + 3 ) ] [3 – 10] -7

Simplify: [5 – ( 4 + 3 ) ] [5 – 7] -2

3(4 + 2) – {7 – [4 – (6 + 5)]} 3(4 + 2) – {7 – [4 – (11)]} 3(4 + 2) – {7 – [-7]} 3(4 + 2) – {14} 18 – 14 = 4

[3(x+4) +1] – (x-5) [3x +12 +1] – (x-5) [3x +13] +-1(x+-5) 3x +13 +-1(x) +-1(-5) 3x +13 +-x +5 2x +18

Assignment: page 96 # 31-40 all
