7. Mandatory Fees Charged Each Semester The Technology fee supports the computer infrastructure on campus: computer networking, internet infrastructure, myUMBC portal site, student labs, wireless systems and the Information Technology Help Desk. AUXILIARY FEES Athletic fee supports intercollegiate athletics and recreation, including club sports, intramurals, fitness programs and open facility usage. Transportation fee supports the maintenance of parking facilities, shuttle buses and the campus program of traffic control. Auxiliary Facilities fee supports the development and maintenance of facilities essential to UMBC's programs. University Commons fee supports services and programs available at The Commons. Student Activities fee covers costs of various student activities and student publications administered by the Student Government Association. Graduate Program fee supports the Graduate Student Association, graduate research and travel grants and other services provided to graduate students.

8. Technology Fee This fee began in 2001 in response to the USM Board of Regents’ requirement that all students graduate fluent in basic technology skills. The fee was expanded to support the student administrative systems initiative occurring at all USM institutions except UMCP.

9. Technology Fee – what does it support? Revenue from the technology fee supplements State funding and is dedicated for student-based technology initiatives, including: – PeopleSoft administrative software – Purchase and maintenance of computer workstations – Increased academic software licensing costs on lab computers – Wireless infrastructure – A/V upgrades in academic classrooms – IT support center

10. What are auxiliary services? Auxiliary services provide essential services to the campus community, such as residential services, food services, bookstore, recreational facilities, parking and transportation, and other services. Auxiliary services contribute to the mission of the institution through providing services that support and enhance the quality of life for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

11. How are auxiliary services funded? Auxiliary services are self-supporting. Auxiliary funding sources include student fees, revenue from customers, bonds, and federal, state and local grants.

12. How are auxiliary fees calculated? When a specific auxiliary service or function is supported by fees, the total budget is based on projected operating and capital expenses for that year as well as projected revenue.

13. What kind of operating expenses do auxiliary fees support? Expenses may include: – Staff that support a program or service. – Operating costs such as utilities and supplies. – Payment on a debt or loan, such as a facilities renewal project. All auxiliary services pay an administrative overhead charge that supports centrally provided services (e.g., purchasing, payroll, law enforcement, accounting, and related support provided by the campus).

14. Operating vs. capital expenses Most auxiliary services rely on facilities such as buildings and major equipment. Their annual budgets include operating expenses, facilities operations (including maintenance and repair), and allocations to facilities replacement reserves.

15. Fee-supported Auxiliary Services at UMBC UMBC provides an extensive array of auxiliary services. These include: – Bookstore – Food Services/Campus Card – Athletics and Recreation – Transportation and Parking – Residential Life – University Commons – Auxiliary Debt Service (Facilities Renewal/Renovation)

Auxiliary Services Supported by Student Fees UMBC has six auxiliary services supported by mandatory student fees: – Athletics* – Transportation* – University Commons* – Auxiliary Facilities – Student Activity – Graduate Program Fee The auxiliary services with asterisks have other sources of revenue in addition to student fees.

17. Athletics Fee – what does it support? The Athletic Fee helps support: – Intercollegiate Athletics – Recreation, including club sports, intramurals, fitness programs and open facility usage – Scholarships Student fees represent 81% of the total revenue supporting these programs.

18. Transportation Fee – what does it support? The Transportation Fee helps support: – Maintenance of parking facilities – Shuttle buses – Campus program of traffic control Student fees represent 77% of the total revenue supporting these programs.

19. University Commons Fee – what does it support? The University Commons Fee helps support: – The Commons – Office of Student Life – Off-Campus Student Services – Student Affairs Programming – Student Affairs Business Services Center Student fees represent 81% of the total revenue supporting these programs.

20. Auxiliary Facilities Fee – what does it support? The Auxiliary Facilities Fee support: – Payment of debt service on campus facilities (e.g., Field House addition, RAC swimming pool & outdoor track, fields) – Reserve fund for regular and emergency repairs to campus buildings Student fees represent 100% of the total revenue supporting these programs.

21. Student Activities Fee – what does it support? Student Activities Fee supports: – Student activities and publications – Administered by Student Government Association (SGA) Graduate Program Fee supports: – Graduate Student Association (GSA) – Graduate research and travel grants – Other services provided to graduate students – Administered by GSA

22. Graduate Program Fee – what does it support? Graduate Program fee supports: – Graduate Student Association (GSA) – Graduate research and travel grants – Other services provided to graduate students – Administered by GSA

23. More on the Graduate Program Fee – Travel and research funding Over the last few years GSA has given between $140K-155K annually for travel and research: Grants allow students to present/attend conferences or conduct research. Doctoral students may receive up to $2,500 in their UMBC graduate career for travel. MFA students may receive up to $2,000 and Masters students up to $1,500.

24. Examples of what travel and research grants have supported Graduate students have traveled to all continents for presentations and research: Biological Sciences doctoral students traveled to Mexico to study the evolution systematics and biogeography of two bird species in the Orioles family in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico and to Queensland, Australia to study the spectral sensitivity of individual photoreceptors in the eyes of stomatopod crustacean larvae. A masters student in EHS traveled to London, England to study the emergency preparedness of the London police/security after the London Subway bombings.
