2. Revalidation – what is it? Revalidation is the means by which Nurses, Midwives & Health Visitors renew their professional registration & demonstrate compliance with the NMC code of conduct. They pay an annual registration fee but are required to formally renew their professional registration online every three years. 4.  The previous system of PREP did not work and was old. Post Mid-Staffs they committed to change  The NMC were supposed to audit 10% of portfolios annually, which they didn't do. When they did do this it cost almost £350 per portfolio. Why is it changing?

6. What will I have to do? You will need to demonstrate the following has been achieved every three years:- 1. 450 practice hours 2. 35 hours of CPD 3. Five pieces of practice related feedback 4. Five pieces of reflection practise 5. Confirmation of health & good character

7. 450 hours of practise Remember this is 450 hours of practice over three years in your scope of practice This should be easily achievable even if you are a part time worker, working on the Bank etc

8. 35 hours of CPD - Learning Study days Learning events, such as a conference or workshop Peer review Coaching and mentoring Participation in clinical audit, practice visits and group meetings Only 20 hrs have to be participatory

9. Practice related feedback x 5 This can come from a variety of sources, including patients, service users, students and colleagues. It can also be obtained through reviewing complaints, team performance reports and serious event reviews. Can be informal or formal, written or verbal. It could be specific feedback about an individual, or feedback about a whole ward, team or organisation

10. Reflections x 5 Written reflective accounts that explain what you learnt, how you changed or improved your work as a result and how it is relevant to the Code. You must use the reflective practice form on the NMC website You must use the NMC reflective accounts template form to record your pieces of reflection You must then have a discussion with another registrant about your reflections and they must document this on the reflective discussion form

11. 12. Health & Character Evidence that your health enables you to practice to the required standard Good Character is now a requirement in the code You must declare to the NMC any convictions and cautions – even if they are not related to nursing or midwifery

13. Confirmation You need to demonstrate to a third party that you have met the revalidation requirements You need to have a confirmation discussion with a third party where you discuss how you have met the revalidation requirements. This can form part of an annual appraisal. An appropriate third party confirmer is your line manager. The NMC recommend that you obtain confirmation from this person wherever possible. A line manager does not have to be an NMC registered nurse or midwife. If you do not have a line manager, we recommend that the third party is an NMC-registered nurse of midwife. If that is not possible, you can seek confirmation from another healthcare professional that you work with and who is regulated in the UK.

14. If for some reason you know you cannot revalidate e.g. You have been on maternity leave or long term sick – contact the NMC as soon as you receive your renewal letter (90 days before its due) The NMC have systems in place for exceptional circumstances, but as revalidation is new not all of these have been tested yet What happens if I cannot revalidate?

15. Myth - v’s - Truth MYTH - My confirmer needs to be with me when I complete the online application TRUTH – No, your confirmer will have provided the necessary details when they sign your confirmation form. You will need the form with you when you submit your application [for confirmers details etc]

16. Myth - v’s - Truth MYTH - I need to discuss each reflective account with a different reflective partner TRUTH – No, the requirement is the name of one reflective partner for all 5 reflective accounts, which they will discuss with you prior to signing off the NMC mandatory reflective practice form

17. Myth - v’s - Truth MYTH – I need to scan and upload the signed reflective discussion and confirmers form to the NMC TRUTH – No, the application process asks you to input the details of your confirmer and reflective partner as part of your submission. These details are typed into the online form

18. Myth - v’s - Truth MYTH – My confirmer has to be a registered nurse or midwife TRUTH – No, the NMC recommends that your confirmer is your line manager who may or may not be a NMC registrant. If they aren’t a registrant then your reflective discussion must take place with another NMC registrant prior to confirmation by a confirmer

19. Myth - v’s - Truth MYTH – I have to be employed in a role providing direct patient care otherwise I am unable to renew my registration TRUTH - Revalidation also applies to those who rely on their skills, knowledge and experience of being a registered nurse/midwife, but may not be employed in a role providing direct patient care
