1  Over the next 4 ½ weeks you will be completing an assignment which is designed to introduce you to the Human Rights Act  The various rights created by the European Convention on Human Rights  The extent and limitations of some of those rights  Please read the Assignment Handout Now...... ASSIGNMENT ON HUMAN RIGHTS

2  INVESTIGATE THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT 1998  In 1998, the European Convention on Human Rights was finally implemented into the UK by Tony Blair’s Labour Government. This Act has had a profound effect on laws in the UK and also how judges decide cases that involve a breach of someone’s human rights.  Research the HRA 1998 using AS workbooks, text books and online resources.  Write a description of sections  1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, and 19  LEARN THESE SECTIONS OFF BY HEART !! Assignment Task 1

3  Design a chart which identifies Articles 2 -12 and Art. 14 from the ECHR and write a BRIEF description of what each Article means.  Absolute? Qualified? Limited?  A good resource is the Liberty website. Describe Claire’s Law and explain what issues there are, in terms of keeping private information private.  Do you think it’s a good idea to disclose information about a person’s abusive history? 5  You have to create a presentation from a choice of the following:  Protection of private life  Freedom of expression  Freedom from discrimination  Use examples from current affairs. Assignment Task 4 Group Presentations

6  Where can you get info from?  How are you going to prepare it?  How are you going to present it? What makes a good presentation?

7  Unit 4 Question  Research this question and write an essay.  (1000 words maximum)  Choose a current human rights issue or story that’s in the newspapers.  Investigate the story, find information about what the issue is and what human right is involved  Write a COMMENTARY OF THIS STORY including your opinion on the issue, whether it is a fair view, what the outcome was and whether you agree with it. Did this breach his right to privacy and Family life?  The Leveson Inquiry into phone hacking by News of the World Journalists should we stop freedom of expression (article 10) of newpapers?  "Lillian Ladele is the real loser in Christian discrimination rulings" reported in the Guardian... Who is Lillian Ladele? Are Christians being discriminated against?  Daily Mail Headline “B&B owners’ right to bar gay couple crushed by ‘need to fight discrimination”. This story was about a couple who turned away a gay couple because of their Christian beliefs. The gays then sued them. The case is Bull v Hall 2013  Glenn Greenwald's partner detained at Heathrow airport for nine hours  David Miranda, partner of Guardian interviewer of whistleblower Edward Snowden, questioned under Terrorism Act. 9  April 7 2014 Jamaican illegal immigrant who murdered a 16 year old schoolboy, cannot be deported because he is gay....  June 4 th 2014, A woman from Ghana cannot be deported after being convicted of force feeding her baby to death, because it would breach her human rights.  In June 2013 the Edward Snowden leaks revealed that GCHQ is intercepting and processing billions of communications every day. This includes recordings of phone calls, content of email messages, social media entries and the history of an internet user's access to websites. All done without your permission.
