1 Louisiana Math Standard (include description): CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.A-REI.B.4b Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x 2 = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a ± bi for real numbers a and b. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.A-APR.B.3 Identify zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations are available, and use the zeros to construct a rough graph of the function defined by the polynomial. 2 Solving Quadratic Equations – Lesson 9-3 1.Define four methods discussed in class that can be used to solve a quadratic equation. 2.Discuss the types of solutions that can result when solving quadratic equations. 3.Discuss the discriminant and explain what it is used to determine. 4.Find examples that will result in each type of solution. Show the discriminant for each example. 5.Create a Microsoft Word document that contain the following: – One paragraph explaining the methods which can be used to solve quadratic equations – One paragraph explaining the discriminant and the various types of solutions possible when solving quadratic equations. – One example of a quadratic equation for each type of solution. Be sure to show the discriminant and explain how it relates to the solution. 6.Save your document file as: firstname_lastname.doc and upload it to Blackboard as an assignment. Review and discuss solving systems of equations in a Word document. This task uses: -Blackboard -Microsoft Word Learning Objective(s): Understand the methods to solve quadratic equation and the types of solutions possible. Identify different types of solutions when solving quadratic equations. Understand the discriminant and how it relates to the solutions. Accurately explain each method of solving quadratic equations, the types of solutions and how they relate to the discriminant. S SUBSTITUTION Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement

3 Solving Quadratic Equations – Lesson 9-3 1.View the “Do The Quad Solve (WSHS Math Rap Song)” video posted in Blackboard (see link to video below). 2.In the video, there a quadratic equations shown. Choose one of them and solve it using whatever method works best for you. 3.In the Blackboard discussion forum, post the quadratic that you solved as well as your solution. 4.Read the post of your shoulder partner and check their answer. 5.Reply to their post with a statement about their answer. 6.If it is incorrect, give them the correction and explain how you arrived at it. If it is correct, let them know Link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGJrH49Z2ZA Watch and respond to a video on solving quadratic equations posted in Blackboard. This task uses: Blackboard Learning Objective(s): Solve quadratic equations using the best method. Evaluate other student’s work. A AUGMENTATION Technology acts as a direct tool for substitution with some functional improvement

4 Solving Quadratic Equations – 9-3 1.Click on the Desmos Quadratic Equations file below. 2.Click on the Desmos Graphing Calculator link (right-click on it to open in a new tab so you can toggle back and forth from it to Blackboard). 3.Using Desmos, graph each of the quadratic equations. 4.Select one of the graphs and use the snipping tool to save it as an image (you can save it to the desktop). 5.Click on the Desmos Graphs Discussion forum in Blackboard below and then click “Create Thread.” 6.Use your name as the thread subject and upload your graph’s image file in the message box by clicking the image icon and searching for it. Do not post which of the quadratics your graph represents. 7.Click “submit.” 8.View the graphs which have been posted in the discussion forum. 9.Select a graph that your shoulder partner posted and reply with which one of the quadratics the graph represents. Link to Desmos Calculator: https://www.desmos.com/calculator Graph quadratic equations using Desmos and compare solutions in a Blackboard forum. This task uses: Desmos Blackboard Learning Objective(s): Use technology to graph quadratic equations. Compare solutions from various methods of solving quadratics. Conduct peer reviews to determine which graph represents each quadratic. M MODIFICATION Technology allows for the creation of new tasks that were previously not conceivable

5 Solving Quadratic Equations – 9-3 1.Examine the examples from section 9-3 in your textbook and notes. 2.Create a word problem that could be represented by a quadratic equation. 3.Solve the quadratic equation for your word problem. 4.Use the iPads and the Tellagami app to create an animation (visual representation) of your word problem and its solution. 5.Be creative, but keep it school appropriate. 6.Save the completed animation (Gami) in the camera roll. 7.Turn in a print copy of your word problem. 8.Open the Safari app on the iPad you used to create your animation. 9.Go to www.cpsb.org and log into Blackboard.www.cpsb.org 10.Click Mrs. Baldwin’s Algebra 1 Classroom. 11.Click on the Quadratic Equations discussion forum. 12.Add a thread and put your name as the subject. 13.Scroll down to Attachments, and click Browse My Computer. 14.Locate your animation video file in the camera roll and select it. 15.Click submit in the bottom right corner. 16.View the uploaded animations and comment on at least two. 17.Provide star ratings for each one that your reviewed. Create an animation representing a word problem with the Tellagami app, then share in a Blackboard forum to be peer-evaluated. This task uses: Tellagami Blackboard Learning Objective(s): Mathematically represent a real world problem. Use technology to represent mathematical problems. Peer review visual representations of mathematical problems. Evaluate visual representations. R REDEFINITION Technology allows for the creation of new tasks that were previously not conceivable.
