5. CIEMAT historical overview CIEMAT activities have always been very much oriented to experimental R&D aiming at the production, and testing, of prototype installations. There are important infrastructures (mechanical and electronics workshops, assembly halls, laboratories, test facilities, computing, …) Born in the early fifties as a research center for R&D associated to the nuclear field (JEN, Junta de Energía Nuclear). In 1986, change of name (CIEMAT) and diversification of R&D lines. (keeping always the label of energy related fields) Today CIEMAT is still the reference of the nuclear field in Spain but has become also a reference for : Thermonuclear Fusion Renewable energies (solar, eolic, biomass, …) Studies for improving efficiency in the use of conventional energies (energy saving, …) Effects of energy production in the environment Metrology. Radiological protection.
