1 Standard 6-2.2: We will be able to analyze the role of Alexander the Great, Socrates, Plato, Archimedes, Aristotle, and others in the creation and spread of Greek governance, literature, philosophy, the arts, math and science. Why is Greece important to study?

2 Vocabulary Legend: a popular story handed down from earlier times that may or may not be true Macedonia: a small ancient kingdom just to the north of Greece Phalanx: a tight infantry fighting formation with overlapping spears and shields Asia Minor: the westernmost peninsula of Asia, comprised of modern-day Turkey Garrison town: a town established for soldiers who are there to protect and secure an area.

4 Macedonia Macedonia was a Greek city-state in Northern Greece. Alexander was the son of King Phillip of Macedonia.

6 Alexander King Phillip united Greek city-states King Phillip was killed when Alexander was 20. Alexander became king.

8 He decided to conquer the Persian Empire. From 334 B.C. until 331 B.C. Alexander and the Greeks fought the Persians.

11 The world as the Greeks knew it didn’t include a lot of Africa and Asia (China), and none of North or South America, Australia, and Antarctica. Think-Pair-Share: This is how they thought the world looked! WHY?

12 Alexander the Great Alexander marched his army east. He conquered lands in Egypt where he was crowned Pharaoh! In Egypt he built the city of Alexandria which became a huge tradecenter.

13 Alexander the Great Eventually his empire stretched out into Europe, Asia, and Africa. This blended Asian and Greek Culture: The Hellenistic Era!

15 Alexander the Great He wanted to find “the end of the world”…but his men were tired and weary. Alexander died from Malaria on the way home (he had ruled for 13 years). His empire was divided up amongst his generals.

17 Alexander the Great’s Influence: Spread Greek culture Started a new culture: Hellenism– a mixture of Asian and Greek cultures.

18 What is a DBQ? Document Based Question Why is it important? To teach students to become better analytical thinkers without losing creativity in the process. To discipline students to give thoughtful answers. We are required to do four DBQs this year. What to expect? Reading, writing, thinking, defending activities
