4. E = mc 2 Prior to 1905, it was thought the law of conservation of energy did not apply to nuclear energy. The sun seemed to produce too much energy. But Einstein proved this in his famous equation. He showed that a small amount of matter could be changed into a huge amount of energy. This is what happens in the sun.
