What is it? Nuclear Energy is the energy stored in holding the nucleus of an atom together. Protons naturally repel each other. Truckee

Radioactivity/Nuclear Radiation The release of energy and matter that results from changes in the nucleus of an atom. All elements with atomic numbers greater than 83 are radioactive. This includes all isotopes. Many elements less than 84 have radioactive isotopes. Nuclear radiation: radioactive decay that releases both particles and energy.

Radioactive Decay The spontaneous breakdown of an unstable atomic nucleus. Decay series: the series of steps by which a radioactive nucleus decays into a nonradioactive nucleus. Trinity: The first atomic bomb

Fission The breaking apart of a larger atom with an unstable nucleus. The splitting of an atomic nucleus into two smaller nuclei of approximately equal mass.

Fusion The combining of two atoms to form a larger atom. The joining of two atomic nuclei of smaller masses to form a single nucleus of larger mass.

Chain Reaction A process that creates a product that is used as a reactant in the next step of the process. a continuous series of reactions. Little Boy

Types of Energy TypeLevelMake-upPenetrationDamage Alpha (  ) Low2 protons & 2 neutrons Little: blocked by paper Sensitive cells (i.e. lungs) Beta (  ) MediumElectronSome: blocked by clothes Deeper skins cells Gamma (  ) HighNo particleVery deep: lead shield All cells

Detecting Radiation Geiger counter: an instrument used to measure the strength of radiation given off by nuclear decay. Fat Man Of the 286,00 people living in Nagasaki at the time of the blast, 74,000 were killed and another 75,000 sustained severe injuries.

Nuclear Reaction Equation 235 92 U  231 90 Th + 4 2 He + energy 14 6 C  14 7 N + 0 -1 e - + energy Baker

Half-Life The length of time it takes for half of a radioactive sample to decay.
