Electronics Stewardship 12

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  Why Do We Need Electronics Stewardship?? 13

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship Federal Electronics Challenge 1.Acquisition 2.Operations & Maintenance 3.Disposal 14

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  Form a Working Group.  Decide what level of FEC you want to achieve.  Keep it as informal as possible the first year – formalize things more in Year 2.  Someone has to be the leader. Step 1 15

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  Sign Up for FEC Challenge (www.federalelectronicschallenge.net)  Begin identifying baseline and complete Baseline Survey w/i 6 weeks of registration.  Start implementing FEC options.  Chances are you are already doing most things required by FEC. Now you need to pull it together. Step 2 16

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  You probably want an SOP, Directive or Regulation.  Our first year we wrote an SOP and informally coordinated with CIO, Environmental and Property Mgmnt.  The SOP addressed all three life cycle phases.  In Year 2, we formalized the SOP by making it a Directive. Pulling It All Together 17

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  Don’t reinvent the wheel!  The FAR requires purchase of EPEAT products. See FAR Subpart 23.7.  Federal property regulations set out disposal practices. See 41 CFR Part 102.36 – Computers for Learning  It can save you money – UNICOR recycles electronics for free. You May Already Be Doing This Stuff 18

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  FLETC will purchase EPEAT ET products rated silver or above.  EPEAT provides clear criteria for manufacturers to develop environmentally friendly products  FAR also mandates EPEAT computers Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool Acquisition Phase 19

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  ET managers will develop policies to extend useful life of ET to 4 years  ET managers will enable energy savings features like “sleep mode” – this includes monitors, printers & copiers  ET managers will sanitize all ET products prior to disposition Operation & Maintenance Phase 20

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  FLETC target is to reutilize or recycle 100% of ET  PMD will dispose of computers IAW property disposal regulations  At end of year, PMD will provide a report on disposal of ET Disposition or End-of-Life Phase: 21

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  CISM Program – Assist battered women & children’s shelter  PMD Program - Cell Phones for Soldiers  Employee Computer Recycling Voluntary Recycling Programs 22

Willis Hunter June 2009 Electronics Stewardship  Anyone going for Gold need partners to mentor.  Cate Berard at OFEE can put you in touch with a mentor.  If all else fails, call me. Get A Mentor 23
