4 Rapid Prototyping Rapid prototyping refers to many different ways of quickly making a physical part or assembly using three- dimensional CAD data. There are lots of ways to make a rapid prototype including: – SLA – Stereolithography uses a laser to harden special liquid resins one layer at a time. – SLS – Selective laser sintering uses a laser to melt metal or plastic powder one layer at a time. – 3-D printing – This works like a paper printer that prints plastic instead of ink.

6 Computer-Aided Design (CAD) A process of using a computer program to create virtual models of objects and systems Most modern CAD software can help engineers: – See how parts will react to applied forces. – Check to see if parts fit together. – Make detailed drawings for use by manufacturers.

7 Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Models made within a CAD program are converted to machine code by CAM software. CAM is part of the process because: – Machines can’t understand CAD files. – In addition to the shape, a machine needs to know how fast to move, how much material to release, and other information that isn’t part of the CAD file.

It is the part of this project that will be turned in for grading. – Don’t lose it! You should complete the sections titled “Initial Ideation,” “Mind Map,” and “Decision Matrix” before next week.
