10 © 2012 Autodesk Topic 1: Exchanging data between CAD and GIS: Vision vs Reality  “Export data from CAD to GIS”… “Data round-tripping between CAD and GIS” – these variations of the topic and associated challenges have been discussed over and over again for the past 10-15 years. What does this mean for you?  Is this still important for your business?  Are you changing your understanding of the topic and why?  What prevents you from taking advantage of CAD data?  What forces adding automated data exchange to data maintenance processes in Utilities (regulatory requirements, utilities aging workforce/infrastructure, technology changes)? Focus on improving Design -> As-Built -> Operate & Maintain workflow

11 © 2012 Autodesk Topic 2: Exchanging data between CAD and GIS: How To Do?  What data should be exchanged?  Just the “location” (e.g. X,Y)? Can we define a set of attributes to exchange?  Spatial accuracy requirements (CAD vs GIS) and impact on exchange?  What solutions improving the exchange have you tried? What worked for you?  Creating “intelligent” CAD objects (CAD blocks with attributes, custom apps/AUD)?  Using common landbase and coordinate system?  What tools do you use to process CAD data?  Data round-tripping between CAD and GIS. Is this even feasible? What is your experience?  Do CAD Standards help? Should CAD standards be modified to support the vision? If yes – how?

12 © 2012 Autodesk Topic 3: Providing Access to Design Data  How to ensure that information created in the Design process is easily accessible to all users when and where they need it (right information to right people at right time)? What are the best practices in:  Archiving  Are you archiving in drawing management system or just on file server?  Can a document management system replace specialized drawing management system? What is your experience?  Finding  What metadata is recorded and when? Files naming convention to indexing?  How do you find design data?  Accessing  Do you have a portal providing unified access to all data including design drawings?  What formats are most appropriate to share design? DWG or perhaps publishing to PDF or DWF is sufficient to communicate design ideas?

13 © 2012 Autodesk Topic 4: Utilizing CAD design data in the Utilities workflow  What do you do with the design data (CAD drawings) when design is completed and why?  Describe use cases where use of source CAD data is beneficial (like maintenance of facilities - substations, UG, call before you dig)  How CAD design process can be changed to improve “utilization” of CAD data in other systems in Utility?  Establishing common model between CAD and GIS objects?  Improving ability to search and cross-reference design data? Recording metadata (how and when)?  How to minimize losses of data captured in Design due to data transition from CAD to other systems?  What data should be “harvested” and preserved from CAD designs?  Should design drawings be updated with as-built information?  How does it work (or doesn’t) in your Utility?  How do identify “changes” between what is in the design drawing and what is in as-built Focus on improving Design -> As-Built -> Operate & Maintain workflow
