Abstract Art Definition: (noun) - Abstract art can be a painting or sculpture (including assemblage) that does not depict a person, place or thing in the natural world -- even in an extremely distorted or exaggerated way. Therefore, the subject of the work is based on what you see: color, shapes, brushstrokes, size, scale and, in some cases, the process.

9. Abstract art began in 1911 with such works as Picture with a Circle (1911) by the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). Kandinsky believed that colors provoke emotions.

10. Minimalist Art Minimalism or Minimal Art is a form of abstraction. It focuses on the most essential and elemental aspects of an object.

34. CONTEST Inspired by Stella: With the debut of North Carolina Museum of Art’s Art of Fashion high school online course, we’re inviting teens (ages 13-19) to submit designs inspired by the work of Frank Stella’s Protractor Series.

35. RULES This is a color restricted contest for designs based on the shapes and colors of these paintings. Designs entered into this contest can use no more than three colors from the paintings (with black or white as a possible 4th color). Previews will be shown at the fat quarter fabric size (21" x 18").

36. WINNERS The top ten designs will be exhibited at the museum January- April 2014 and the winning designer will be recognized at NCMA’s ArtScene Teen event on April 26th, 2014.
