Essential Question? How can you use exponents to represent repeated multiplication of the same number? We know how to use repeated addition: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 You can also say that this is 4 x 3, which is 12

Some Key Terms Base- The number that is multiplied by itself when raised to a power. Exponent- A number that tells how many times the base is used as a factor. 6 x 6 x 6 = 6³ Squared-A name for a number to the second power. - 7 x 7 = 7² Cubed- A name for a number to the third power. - 8 x 8 x 8 = 8³ Factor Exponent Base

How to write Exponents Exponential notation- A way to write a number using a base and an exponent, for example, 8 can be written as 2³. Standard form- A common way of writing a number. Expanded form- a way to write a number that shows the place value of each digit. Exponential notation- 5³ Standard form- 125 Expanded form- 5 x 5 x 5 What is the standard form of 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2? _____________ Write 8 ⁷ in expanded form _______________________ Write 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 in exponential notation _________________

Repeated Multiplication Repeated addition can be changed into multiplication Repeated multiplication can be shown using exponents. 7 x 7 = 7² 9 x 9 x 9 = 9³ 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 3 ⁴ 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5= 5 ⁵

You cannot change the base in repeated multiplication! This would not work! 4 x 4 x 5 x 4 3 x 3 x 1 2 x 4 x 2 You must have the same base when using exponents!!!

Squared and Cubed!! Don’t forget when you raise a base to a power (exponent) 2 and 3 have special names! 5 x 5 = 5 ² This is the same as saying 5 to the second power or, 5 squared! 7 x 7 x 7 = 7 ³ Is the same as saying 7 to the third power or, 7 cubed!
