General Science Chapter 1 Review Mrs. Nell

Science Science is the process of trying to understand the world around us. Technology is the use of knowledge learned through science.

Observation or Inference? When you watch carefully and take measurements and describe or draw what you see- you are making observations. An inference is an explanation of why something happened… or how you explain what you observe.

The Scientific Method (Step 1) Prepare Identify the problem –What do you want to find out? –What do you already know? Form a hypothesis (statement that can be tested about a problem)

The Scientific Method (Step 2) Plan Control variables (factors in an experiment that can change) –Only one variable should be changed at a time –If more than one variable is changed you can’t be sure which variable caused the results Determine number of trials (how many times you should repeat the experiment) Create list of materials Create a data table (chart which organizes info into columns/rows) to record observations during the experiment

The Scientific Method (Step 3) Do Think about safety when doing an experiment (test of a hypothesis) Have teacher approve plan before beginning experiment Record all observations in your science journal –Scientists depend on what other scientists have learned

The Scientific Method (Step 4) Conclude and Apply Analyze the results –Look at the results and figure out what they mean –Draw conclusions

Safety Symbols Scientists use safety symbols to inform you about possible hazards when conducting experiments. Disposal Special disposal required Biological Organisms that can harm humans Extreme Temperature Objects that can burn skin Sharp Object Use of tools or glassware that can puncture or slice skin Fumes Potential danger from smelling fumes Electrical Possible danger from electrical shock or burn Irritant Substances that can irritate your skin or mucous membranes Chemical Substances (acids or bases) that can react with and destroy tissue and other materials Toxic Poisonous substance Fire Flammable and combustible materials may burn if exposed to an open flame or spark Eye Safety This symbol appears when a danger to eyes exists Clothing Protection This symbol appears when substances could stain or burn clothing Animal Safety This symbol appears whenever live animals are studied

Safety in the Lab

Following Safety Precautions Scientists must follow safety precautions when doing experiments to prevent serious injuries from occurring.

Safety Precautions (I) 1) Slant test tubes away from yourself when heating them.

Safety Precautions (II) 2) Never eat or drink in the lab.

Safety Precautions (III) 3) Never inhale chemicals- don’t taste ANYTHING!!!

Safety Precautions (IV) 4) Report any accidents or injuries to your teacher.

First Aid If there is a chemical spill- immediately notify the instructor. All spills must be neutralized and cleaned up properly. If you burn yourself in the lab, cool the burn with water and notify the instructor. If there is an acid or base spill, rinse immediately with water and notify the instructor.

Safety Precautions (V) 5) When cleaning up, get rid of chemicals and other materials as directed by your teacher.

Safety Precautions (VI) 6) Wash your hands after working in the lab.
