Mosaic Household types Experian’s MOSAIC classifies every house in Surrey into one of 62 types. In North Leatherhead, 4 of these 62 types account for nearly a quarter of all households. Each of these 4 types is more heavily represented in North Leatherhead than the rest of Surrey: 8% H36: Young singles and sharers renting small purpose built flats (3 times greater, proportionately, than Surrey average) 6% H37 Young owners and rented developments of mixed tenure (4 times greater, proportionately, than Surrey average) 6% H38 People living in brand new residential developments (9 times greater, proportionately, than Surrey average) 3% M57 Old people in flats subsisting on welfare payments (19 times greater, proportionately, than Surrey average) The next 4 slides give ‘pen portraits’ of these Mosaic types

H36: Young singles and sharers renting small purpose built flats 8% of households in North Leatherhead… Young, single people, living in small, modern, purpose-built flats, many rented from private landlords. Tend not to be well integrated into the local community. Although the police are seldom called to incidents, anonymity and ease of access to rentable accommodation can make neighbourhoods attractive to criminals. Most residents have good health. They are as likely to visit their local doctor for vaccinations or a sports injury as for any other reason. Residents make little use of local authority leisure services such as parks, swimming pools and libraries. Electoral registration is patchy and at election time turnout is low, reflecting a general lack of interest in how public services are managed as a result of few of them being used. Mosaic Profiles

H37 Young owners and rented developments of mixed tenure 6% of households in North Leatherhead… Mixture of young, first time buyers and renters living in small, modern houses. Most are single or cohabit with young partners. Most have little historic attachment to the community in which they live and suffer from relatively weak support networks. Levels of crime relatively high. These young people can be careless about the security of their possessions, and anti-social behaviour is not uncommon. Health levels are good, although stress can affect wellbeing. Leisure time: bars, clubs, cinemas, coffee shops or engaged in electronic entertainment within the home rather than in parks, swimming pools and libraries. Many feel uninvolved in formal political processes Mosaic Profiles

H38 People living in brand new residential developments 6% of households in North Leatherhead… Young, single or cohabiting adults who do not yet have children who have moved into new homes in recent months. Among the least likely to be involved in the local community or to be active in voluntary organisations. These neighbourhoods are seldom visited by the police on a regular basis. Moving house can be stressful, so it should not be assumed that they have few health anxieties even though most residents are young. Frequent issue: residents are not yet registered with a local doctor. Decorating and furnishing their homes is likely to be a major leisure activity for many residents. Many are also likely to make use of sports facilities and swimming pools to a greater extent than parks and open spaces. Many will find their names missing from the electoral roll and ineligible to vote Mosaic Profiles

M57 Old people in flats subsisting on welfare payments 3% of households in North Leatherhead… A mix of pensioners and young people living in small flats in mid to high rise developments rented from local councils and housing associations. Most have very low incomes. Mostly people who remained in the town in which they were born. However, they often have weak links with their local community. Vandalism, graffiti, damage to cars indicate the presence of anti- social elements. Police can find it difficult to obtain reliable witnesses. Poor levels of health; smoking and alcohol addiction are common. Much leisure time is spent at home in front of the television and, except for young people who may travel to leisure facilities in large towns, most people restrict their use of leisure facilities to local area. These neighbourhoods suffer from low levels of electoral registration. Mosaic Profiles
