3 Brunel University London 3 Advanced Powertrain and Fuels Strengths  One of the largest & most active IC engines group in the UK - 8 academic staff +20 PhD/RAs  Excellent facilities: 12 engine test beds - State of art SCR engines - Comprehensive optical techniques  Internationally leading engine combustion research and outputs  Collaboration with major engine/car manufacturers in the UK and overseas Internationally leading research in combustion engines and fuels for a range of applications

4 Brunel University London 4 Advanced Powertrain and Fuels Areas of current and future research:  High Efficiency and Clean Internal Combustion (IC) Engines  Bio-Fuel characterisation and application to IC engines  Advanced Boosting Technologies  Hybrid powertrain technologies  Fundamental spray and combustion studies and model development  Development and application of advanced laser diagnostics and endoscopic techniques for IC engines research and development

5 Brunel University London Future Power Networks – Smart Grids Strengths  One of the leading UK power systems research centres  Established track record as Brunel Institute of Power Systems (BIPS)  Links and collaboration with major power and energy companies:  National Grid; UK Power Networks; Alstom; GE Energy, EDF Energy  National and international research collaborations including China, France, Spain, Germany, Romania, Czech Replubic, Slovenia etc.  Good range of facilities Internationally leading research on power networks and smart grids for efficient power distribution and utilisation

6 Brunel University London Future Power Networks – Smart Grids Main Areas of current and future research:  Developing smart transmission and distribution networks  Optimum Integration of Renewable Energy Sources (ie Wind and Solar into the grid)  Novel ICT solutions for Smart Grids – Big Data Analytics

7 Brunel University London Resource Efficient Future Cities Current activities  Energy demand of urban buildings and mitigation/adaptation strategies  Energy efficiency in buildings  The use of natural, recyclable and smart materials in building construction  Integration of renewable and passive systems with active mechanical systems  Holistic approaches to sustainable development and infrastructure management REFCities is a new interdisciplinary grouping focussing on buildings (energy efficiency and materials) and surrounding infrastructure.
