3 Beliefs Reincarnation Recycle: birth, death, rebirth Seek detachment from worldly desires Four noble truths Nirvana- release from selfishness and pain Eight fold path

4 The Tripitaka Holy book (doctrine) Collection of sayings and rules for conduct

5 Four Noble Truths 1 st - Everything in life is suffering and sorrow 2 nd - The cause of all suffering is people’s selfish desire for the temporary pleasures of this world 3 rd - The way to end all suffering is to end all desires 4 th - The way to overcome such desires and attain enlightenment is to follow the Eightfold Path, which is called the Middle Way between desires and self-denial

6 Eight Fold Path Right views, right resolve, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. This is the Middle Way

7 Practice An established order of monks Lives of meditation, live on alms Temples primarily used for individual meditation Monks and nuns took vows to live in poverty, to be nonviolent, and not to marry
