1 Describing Matter

2 Physical Properties of Matter
All substances or objects have physical properties. Physical properties are those characteristics of an object or substance that can be observed without changing it into something else.

3 Physical Properties of Matter
Examples of physical properties: color mass volume length smell temperature boiling point

4 Physical Properties of Matter
Name the physical properties of this object:

5 Physical Change A physical change is a change in size, shape, or state of an object. No new substances are formed. Physical changes can be reversed.

6 Physical Change Examples of physical change: Freezing/melting of water
Tearing of paper Smashing of a soda can Chopping of wood

7 Chemical Change A chemical change results in the formation of a new substance with new properties Chemical changes are NOT reversible.

8 Chemical Change Look for signs such as: color change
bubbling and fizzing light production smoke presence of heat.

9 Examples of chemical change:
Burning paper/wood Mixing baking soda and vinegar Digesting food Baking cookies

10 Chemical Properties of Matter
All substances or objects also have chemical properties. Chemical properties describe how a substance interacts or fails to interact with another.

11 Chemical Properties of Matter
Examples of chemical properties: Flammability of gasoline Rusting of iron exposed to water Inability of neon gas to react with any other element
