Ms. Pierce 7th Grade Reading

 A story's plot is what happens in the story and the order it happens in.  For there to be story, something has to move, to change. Something goes from point A to point B.

Exposition/Introduction The beginning of the story where the characters and the setting is revealed. Example: Characters: Noah, Abbey, Paine, Donna, etc. Setting: Key West, Florida Conflict: Dusty is dumping poop in the ocean & Paine sinks Dusty’s boat

Rising Action This is where the events in the story become complicated and the conflict in the story is revealed (events between the introduction and climax).  Biggest chunk of the story.  Consists of all the events that lead up to the climax.

 Noah visiting his dad in jail.  Dad being arrested.  Meeting Jasper Jr. and Bull.  Meeting Shelly & Lice.  Noah & Abbey sneaking out of the house.  Dad escaping from jail.  Abbey sneaking out by herself.

Climax This is the highest point of interest and the turning point of the story. The reader wonders what will happen next; will the conflict be resolved or not?  We have not reached the climax in Flush yet.

Falling action The events and complications begin to resolve themselves. The reader knows what has happened next and if the conflict was resolved or not (events between climax and resolution).  How it all works out.  Will Paine & Donna get a divorce?  Will Paine start thinking before acting?  Will Noah catch Dusty? How?  What will happen to Dusty? Jasper Jr.? Bull?

Resolution The Part of the plot that concludes the falling action by revealing or suggesting the outcome of the conflict.  Ties up all the lose ends & answers all our questions.  Brings the story to “THE END.”
