3 Potential Hazards in the field at Fermilab Trip/fall hazards Water Stinging/biting insects Poisonous plants Tools (hand or power) Weather

4 Trip/fall hazards Step carefully over uneven ground Use of any climbing gear (ladders, stands, etc.) over six feet in height must be accompanied by separate review by ES&H

5 Water Hazards Use of boats requires two people and life vest for each. Working near shore, have a rescue plan and adequate equipment (e.g., rope, pole, life preserver).

6 Stinging/biting “wildlife” Mosquitoes (WNV)– Use DEET product Ticks (Lyme disease) Wasps, Bees, Hornets – Avoid if possible!! Reptiles – Unlikely, there are no venomous species known at Fermilab Coyotes – Respect and avoid

7 Plants Poison ivy Nettles Various thorns

8 Hand/power tools Hand or power tools can result in pinching, striking or cutting injuries Electric power tools can be shock hazards, especially in outdoor environments (must have GFCI protection unless battery-operated) Engines on tools (e.g., “weed whackers”, etc.) can present burn hazards as well as cutting, other hazards.

9 Weather replenish fluids!Heat exhaustion, hyperthermia – replenish fluids! Intense sun can cause serious sunburn Cold hazards include frostbite, hypothermia Dress sensibly for the conditions; use SPF15 sunscreen when exposed to strong sun; limit exposure. Locate tornado shelter; seek ditch or low ground

10 Stay Away!!! Electrical cables All warning signs Buildings (other than Wilson Hall or specifically authorized) Construction zones Restricted areas not specified by the MOU
