 There are 24 time zones around the world. Each time zone is approximately 15 degrees (meridians) of longitude. Time zones do not follow straight lines of longitude from the North Pole to the South Pole.  Reason Why a Time Zone Will Bend:  To go around a city to keep the city on the same time  West – Left East – Right  Take 1 hour away Add 1 hour -1h+1h +2h +3h-2h-3h U.T. Prime Meridian NORTH 45°W 30°W 15°W 0° 15°E 30°E 45°E

 1. Newfoundland S.T. – (St. John’s) ½ hour time difference  2. Atlantic S.T. – (Halifax) – 1 hour time difference  3. Eastern S.T. – (Cambridge) – 1 hour time difference  4. Central S.T. – (Winnipeg) – 1 hour time difference  5. Mountain S.T. – (Edmonton) – 1 hour time difference  6. Pacific S.T. – (Victoria) – 1 hour time difference  International Date Line: The line that generally follows the 180 degree line of longitude where one day ends and the next begins. Travelling west cross the dateline will add a day. Travelling east across the dateline will take a day away.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZuDzFjzoqc (6 minutes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZuDzFjzoqc

 When a BENNIES student finishes school at 2:25 pm, what time is it in?  Winnipeg, Manitoba_________________________  Vancouver, B.C._________________________  Halifax, NS_________________________  An Edmonton Oilers game is being televised live across the country. If the game starts at 8:00 pm mountain time, at what time would viewers see the game in St. John’s, Nfld? _______________  A salesperson is making a trip from Toronto, Ontario to Victoria BC. The flight departs Toronto at 10:00 pm and takes four hours. What time will the flight arrive in Victoria? _______________

 Whenever there is an election in Canada, everyone likes to turn on the TV to find out how the rest of the country voted. By law, the polling stations must close at 8:00 pm local time. Election coverage on TV cannot begin until that time.  When we turn on the TV at that time, we already know the election results in Newfoundland and have a pretty good idea how they voted in the Maritime Provinces. How could this be possible?_____________________________________________________  Until the 1993 federal election, the coverage used to begin across Canada at 8:00 pm in the eastern time zone. However, the people in Vancouver were very upset at this, and as a result it is now against the law to give live TV coverage coast to coast at that time. Explain why?_____________________________________________________

 Suppose we are all watching the Stanley Cup playoff game from Montreal, and it goes into overtime and doesn’t end until 12:30 am Montreal time. Just before the game goes off the air, Bob Cole, the hockey announcer says “Stay tuned following the game for the national news which will be seen in eastern time zone following the game, but will be seen at it’s regular time [11:00 pm] on the west coast.” How is it possible for people to watch the ‘New Vancouver’ 90 minutes before viewers in the east see it when they are three hours behind the eastern time zone? By the way, the news always originates on CBC from Toronto.
