EN-MEF Group Meeting New Faces MARS and the CERN Competency Model Challenges and Object1ves for 2012 & LS1 Concentrate on the changes & new challenges How can we meet these challenges? And not neglect our existing activities ….

New Faces 10 new faces in the last few months! Plus a few old faces…. Nos quatre mousquetaires de la sécurité = Michel, Manu, Cyrille, & John

December 5, 2011Roberto Saban4 Safety is important

CERN Competency Model (CCM) What we do is important but how we do it, is also important Technical Competencies (What) CERN Values and behavioural competencies (How) The CCM is replacing the criteria used for:- Assessment for recruitment Mid and end of probation reports MARS assessments LD to IC process Career review and promotions exercises See https://hr-info.web.cern.ch/hr-info/competencies.asphttps://hr-info.web.cern.ch/hr-info/competencies.asp

2012 MARS & CCM See online MARS guideonline MARS guide Results of the 2011 MARS objectives will be assessed in 2 ways What (i.e. the results obtained, objectives meet etc….) How (i.e. Competencies demonstrated … up to 2) There will be no rating of the competences, but competences demonstrated and any areas of improvement should be high-lighted and, if necessary, addressed. Overall performance qualification will not change i.e. Particularly meritorious Meritorious Non-meritorious

2012 MARS & CCM Work and supervisory objectives will be set as follows:- Covering 3-5 areas Results defined in measurable terms on a clear time scale Indication of resources needed (if appropriate) Development objectives replace the training objectives These can be either technical or behavioural They can refer to specific training courses if appropriate They can also refer to any areas of development identified in the 2011 assessment Where necessary Safety form OHS-0-0-3 must be completed as part of the MARS exerciseOHS-0-0-3

Supervisors have taken both CCM and MARS training courses There are half-day training MARS training courses organised for all CERN Staff to:- Help you understand the use of the CCM in today’s MARS process Help you and your supervisor complete a fair assessment of your work, your objectives and your development needs for the future Please follow this half-day MARS training…. 2012 MARS & CCM

2012 Fixed target Physics CNGS

CERN GPS LNGS GPS horns muon detectors   t=57ns 10500ns 524ns CNGS Activities as a Consequence of the OPERA Results on the Neutrino Velocity Measurements CNGS nominal beam is 10500ns long A lot of statistics needed for time of flight analysis Many possible systematic effects along the secondary beam line  Send LHC type bunched beam to CNGS Precise timing of each neutrino interaction Many systematic effects excluded - bunched beam was set up very efficiently - operation from 21 Oct to 6 Nov 2011 - 4 bunches, each 2ns long, separated by 524ns  Results included in final OPERA paper

38 LAGUNA_LBNO / FP7 Design Study (2011- 2014) New design study, extending that of LAGUNA, including the neutrino beams from CERN CN2PY (Pyhasalmi)  Initial : beam from SPS (500kW - 750kW)  Long term: LP-SPL + HPPS - 2MW CNGS - Umbria  Beam from SPS (500kW)  No near detector possibility 2300 km 130km CN2FR (Frejus)  HP-SPL + accumulator ring (5 GeV – 4 MW) Synergy with β-beam (γ=100) 730 km ‣ Beam options for unique physics opportunities in Europe ‣ Profit from experience gained with the CNGS operation ‣ Incremental approach with competitive physics goals at each stage ‣ Synergy with other ν-beam options under study: β-beam, NF ‣ Collaboration in a global scale, profit from know-how in other ν-beam facilities in US and Japan

How can we meet these challenges? Group organisation has not changed since 1/1/2009 New factors Arrival of Safety Coordinators Real shutdowns are very rare, but very long LS1 = 23 months for LHC & 15 months for Injectors New Projects ELENA, PSB@2GeV, LIU-PS, LIU-SPS… Organisation of the Group should reflect these factors and the future activities of the group
