How Do We Incorporate CCSS ELA Shift #1-Reading and Writing Grounded in Evidence through ELA Units and Other Subject Areas? CVUSD Professional Development February 27, 2015 1

CC Reading Anchor Standards Reading Standards for Literature Reading Standards for Informational Text Key Ideas & Details # 1,2,3 Craft and Structure # 4,5,6 Integration of Knowledge & Ideas # 7,8,9 Range of Reading & Level of Text Complexity # 10 ** www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/CCRA/RL 2

Instructional Shifts in CCSS ELA 1.Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text 2.Using complex texts and academic language 3.Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction 3

Sue Z. Beers 80-90% of (CCSS) reading standards require text-dependent analysis yet over 30% of questions in major textbooks do not. Why is Reading and Writing Grounded in Evidence Important?

What is close reading? “…a careful and purposeful rereading of a text.” “…an encounter with a text where the students really focus on what the author had to say, what the author’s purpose was, what the words mean, and what the structure of the text tells us.” Close Reading Part 1- Douglas Fisher Close Reading Part 2 5

Creating a Close Reading Short passage Complex text Limited frontloading Repeated readings Text-dependent questions

Sample Step for Close Reading 1.Introduce Text (establish focus) 2.Read 3.Reread with a Pencil (or post-its!) 4.Discuss 5.Reread with a Text Dependent Question 6.Write 7

Close Reading in a Grade 1 Text Days with Frog and Toad (The Hat) 10

HM Questions ( Grade 1.5 page 220) 1.How do you know that Frog and Toad were good friends? (RL.1.1) 2.What did Frog and Toad learn in this story? (RL.1.3) 3.What would you do with a hat that would not fit? 4.Were Frog and Toad the same kind of friends the bears were in Two Greedy Bears? (RL.1.9) 11

What are Reader Response Questions? Draw on past experiences Evoke a mood Encourage predictions Elicit opinions Make personal connections Use the imagination 12

What are Text Dependent Questions? Draw the reader back to the text Have concrete answers Do not rely on opinion, background information, or imagination Explore vocabulary, details, explanation, and arguments Extract meanings from text 13

Where do we start? Evaluate questions in anthology Write or locate text dependent questions Relate question to a grade level standard 14

Close Reading in a Grade 6 Text A Kind of Grace 15

HM Questions (Grade 6, page 468) 1.How did Jackie feel about coming to practice everyday during her first summer on the team? (RI.6.1) 2.Describe a goal you have? 3.Why do you think Jackie waited so long before trying the long jump? (RI.6.1) 4.Was Mr. Ward an effective coach? (RI.6.1) 5.Do you think girls today have an easier time pursuing athletic dreams than girls of Jackie’s day did? 6.On the days when she didn’t have practice, what did Jackie do to improve her jumping? (RI.6.1) 16

Example (RI.6.2) Determine a central idea of a text… 1.Jackie’s training was called “unconventional” (p. 454). Unconventional means not the usual way. Find an example of this in the text. Possible Evidence: “I found potato chip bags and convinced my sisters to go over to the sandbox in the park, fill the bags and help me bring the sand back to the house…I hopped on to our porch railing…and leaped into the sand.” (p. 464) 17

Citing Textual Evidence Borrow from the question to start your response for sentence #1 Add your reason using because, by, etc. Text evidence now needs to be found from the book, story, passage, paragraph, etc. Open sentence #2 by using “For example”, or “For instance”, and “on page #____”, Next, write “the author states” or “the character states” and use text evidence by quoting a sentence directly from the book, story, passage, paragraph, etc. Still not finished. Explain how your text evidence supports your reason. 18

Other Ideas for implementing Close Reading and Text-Dependent responses: **OREO Close Read **CROP QV Reading Log **Text Dependent Responses in Social Studies and Science 19
