OGC ® Topics Point Cloud DWG MOU with ASPRS Community Standard Copyright © 2015 Open Geospatial Consortium

OGC ® Point Cloud Domain Working Group (DWG) Approved by members in August 2015 Held first meeting in at OGC Technical Committee (TC) meeting in Nottingham, UK on 15 September 2015 Elected Chairs: –Chair: Stan Tillman, Intergraph –Co-Chair: Jan Boehm, University College London –Co-Chair: Peter van Oosterman, Delft University of Technology Everybody and their brother is participating Copyright © 2015 Open Geospatial Consortium

OGC ® Point Cloud DWG Agenda Serving LiDAR thru existing OGC services Scott Pakula, Pixia The ASTM E57 Data Interoperability Standard Gene Roe, Lidar News OGC WCS: format-independent point cloud services Peter Baumann, Jacobs University Point Cloud Usage in a Railway Context and rules/issues related to extraction and sharing Barry Gleeson, RICS IQmulus - Cloud Platform for Point Cloud Processing Jan Boehm, University College London Point Cloud from Photogrammetry Jean-Baptiste Henry, Thales Management and direct use of massive point clouds Edward Verbree, Delft University of Technology Copyright © 2015 Open Geospatial Consortium

OGC ® Point Cloud DWG: expressed member interests Dominant theme of pulling together disparate data in multiple encoding formats Interest in point cloud web services –New standard? –Use Web Feature Service (WFS)? –Use Web Coverage Service (WCS)? Continuing interest in photogrammetric points (Thales, Ordnance Survey), bathymetry, meteorology Diversity in interest makes for flexible standards, but have to be careful not to be all things to all users Copyright © 2015 Open Geospatial Consortium

OGC ® MOU with ASPRS Memorandum Of Understanding between ASPRS and OGC executed 1 September 2015 Three main work items: –The OGC and ASPRS will work jointly to develop use cases and requirements for open geospatial standards in the domains of data acquisition and dissemination, image processing, and remote sensing science. –The OGC and ASPRS will work jointly to assess the current state of adopted and de facto standards for Point Cloud data, consider collaborative publication of one or more standards where there is a mutual benefit of both organizations, and identify the scope of future standards that will facilitate interoperability of Point Cloud data for sharing and analysis. –The OGC and ASPRS will cooperatively promote and participate in relevant OGC and ASPRS initiatives, including working groups, committee activities, Testbed and Pilot initiatives, regional forums, and workshops. 7 OGC ® Community Standard Proposed new standard track for OGC, in process of member approval vote Allows for an external standard to be brought into the OGC process for official adoption –Candidate standard must have evidence of significant implementation –Candidate standard does not have to be published on OGC template –Candidate standard does not have to comply with OGC Abstract or Modular Specifications –Intellectual Property can be shared between originating party and OGC –Expedited approval process, but still requires 2/3 member approval Copyright © 2015 Open Geospatial Consortium

OGC ® Final thoughts The user community needs interoperability Industry and Government will proceed with optimizing storage, discovery, and retrieval of point cloud data with or without OGC standards We (all of us, not just OGC) must identify where the user community most needs assistance Do you detect a subtext here? Excellent work has already been done and is well-accepted – let’s solve the unsolved problems. Copyright © 2015 Open Geospatial Consortium
