Table Examples in Word Manual Let’s look at page R13 in your Word Reference Manual: There are examples of tables that are:  Open  Boxed  Ruled Question: How should text entries be aligned in a table column?

Table Examples in Word Manual Text entries should always be left-aligned. What about number entries, how are these entries aligned?

Table Examples in Word Manual Number entries should be right aligned? Why do we even ask this? Isn’t this automatic in Word table? Isn’t text always left-aligned, and numbers right-aligned?

Text, Number Alignment No, alignment isn’t necessarily automatic in Word tables. In Word, when you add a table, the cursor will be blinking in the first cell, at the left margin. So, if you type text it will be aligned correctly.

Text, Number Alignment However, if your first row includes number entries, you will have to manually change the alignment to right.  This differs from Excel, which automatically alignments data in a cell, according to the data type.

Table Let’s talk about how data should be organized in a table.  Organization should be logical  Easily understood  Goal is to have someone who is unfamiliar with the table data to be able to orient themselves with little difficulty. Question: Give an example of information that is presented in a table format, that you see daily.

Table Examples You will find tables on:  Medicine bottles  Cereal boxes  TV listings Can you think of any others?

Word vs. Excel Are there any advantages to using Excel over Word when setting up a table?

Language Arts Let’s look at Lesson 37, page 134 in your textbook. The Language Arts lesson covers the use of apostrophes.  Apostrophes are used to show possession.  The babies’ strollers were parked in front of the zoo.  The baby’s pacifier was on the floor.  Two different words, but pronounced the same.  How does this pose a problem in proofreading/spell checks?

Apostrophes Easy to miss in proofreading, because the words sound alike, but their spelling and punctuation can change the meaning of a sentence Can you think of similar words?  What are some examples of words that end with y, but when made plural, end with ies?
