Biology Chapter 1 - Biology and You

Themes of Biology #1) Cellular Structure and Function #2) Reproduction #3) Metabolism #4) Homeostasis #5) Heredity #6) Evolution #7) Interdependence

Cellular Structure and Function Cell theory –All living things are made of cells –Cells are the smallest unit capable of life functions –Cell come only from other cells

Reproduction The process by which living organisms make more of their own kind Some bacteria can reproduce every 15 minutes Reproduction is necessary for continuation of species, but not necessary for survival

Metabolism Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions carried out by an organism –Obtain/use energy –Grow/move/develop –Process information All energy originates from the sun

Homeostasis and Heredity Homeostasis is the ability to maintain a stable internal environment even if the external environment changes Heredity is the passing of traits from parent to offspring

Evolution and Interdependence Evolution- changes in the inherited traits of species over generations Interdependence - organisms live and interact with other organisms

Biology in Your World Preserving Our Environment (natural resources) Genes are inherited, but can be influenced by environment Improving Food Supply - cultivating plants: domestic animals (selective breeding)plants resistant to pesticide Genetic research in health field (generate enzymes and hormones) Biological research helps diagnose, treat, prevent, and cure diseases

Stages of Scientific Investigations Making observations Asking questions Forming hypotheses –Making predictions Confirming predictions Drawing conclusions Viewing conclusions in context Also known as scientific method

Constructing a Theory Form theory Data support hypothesis Reject original hypothesis Make observations Ask ??, Form hypothesis Make predictions Perform controlled experiments
