1 Reader’s Workshop What is it? How does it work? Is it EVERY day? What is expected of us? “Tis the good reader that makes the good book.” - Emerson

2 What is it? Readers’ workshop allows students to gain the benefits of reading by self-selection, self- pacing, and time spent reading and sharing books. The teacher demonstrates how to explore literature and supports student- led discussion groups. Students gain the knowledge to understand literature on multiple levels and respond to it thoughtfully.

3 Is it EVERY day?! Monday and Friday will be Reader’s Workshop (RW). On these days we will concentrate on reading comprehension strategies, share literature, conference, and READ!

4 How Will I be Graded? You will be graded on three parts: –How the student followed workshop procedures (IR rubric)IR rubric –The quality of the student’s written responses in Reader’s Notebook (Reading Log Rubric)Reading Log Rubric –The student’s progress toward goals that have been set collaboratively by the student and the teacher

5 What are my Goals for Readers Workshop? Find books, authors, subjects, and themes that matter to you, to your life, to who you are and who you want to become Keep a list of your territories as a reader: authors, subjects, purposes, and genres. Try new authors, subjects, purposes, and genres; expand your reading schemas. Recognize that there are different modes of reading and different stances readers take in regard to different kinds of texts. Develop and articulate your criteria (standards) for selecting and abandoning books.

6 Goals Continued Go inside your books and respond to the writing you are reading; decide what is working and needs more work in the books you read. Read as much as you can, as joyfully as you can. Read for at least 30 minutes seven days a week. Maintain your annotated bibliography of the books you finish reading or abandon.annotated bibliography Take a deliberate stance toward reading and responding with your whole heart and mind.
