Numeracy at Oakdale

Plan for this evening Short overview of Numeracy at Oakdale. Identify some useful resources for use at home. Chance to visit the classrooms to explore the resources used in school and the methods of calculation used to help with supporting your child at home.

Our school motto fits perfectly with our vision of what maths is. Through a rich and varied range of experiences, we hope to enthuse children about maths, inspiring them to embrace the philosophy that maths is a journey. A path of discovery, a route to success

Journeys are not simply about reaching the final destination, they can be so much more. They can be opportunities to explore, try new pathways and discover new things. We also encourage the children to understand that sometimes we get lost or our car breaks down. This is normal and all part of the experience. We can always fix the car or ask for directions, and if all else fails, there’s always the AA! The aim of tonight is to give you an insight into the vehicles used to reach the fabled destination of ‘The Correct Answer’. Although you will see and be spoken to about many ‘Correct Answers’, we hope that you, just like your children, understand that the way in which ‘The Correct Answer’ is found is where learning really takes place.

Common Misconceptions Is mental calculation the same as mental arithmetic? Can mental calculation involve paper and pencil? Is speed important?

Is mental calculation the same as mental arithmetic? NO! Mental arithmetic is rapid recall of known facts (number bonds and times tables). Mental calculation is about being able to work something out in your head. 9 Can mental calculation involve paper and pencil? YES! 1.Through jottings (steps in calculation). 2.Through images (models and diagrams - mental imagery). 3.Recording for another audience or recording thought processes. 10 Is speed important? YES, but only once a strategy has been accurately aquired. Develop efficient methods. Mental Recall Mental Calculations with jottings Informal Methods Expanded Written Methods Standard Written Methods Calculator

How can you help your child in Maths? Be aware what maths your child is doing in school (APP grids). Support them with their homework, whilst encouraging independence as they mature. Include maths in your everyday lives.

How can you help your child in everyday life? Go shopping with your child to buy two or three items. Ask them to work out the total amount spent and how much change you will get. Use a TV guide. Ask your child to work out the length of their favourite programmes. Can they calculate how long they spend watching TV each day / each week? Use a bus or train timetable. Ask your child to work out how long a journey between two places should take? Go on the journey. Do you arrive earlier or later than expected? How much earlier/later? Help your child to scale a recipe up or down to feed the right amount of people. Work together to plan a party or meal on a budget.

Examples of quick activities to help mental maths? Find out which number facts your child is learning at school (addition facts to 10, times tables, doubles etc). Try to practise for a few minutes each day using a range of vocabulary. Play ‘ping pong’ to practise complements with your child. You say a number. They reply with how much more is needed to make 10. You can also play this game with numbers totalling 20, 100 or 1000. Encourage your child to answer quickly, without counting or using fingers. Use a set of playing cards (no pictures). Turn over two cards and ask your child to add or multiply the numbers. If they answer correctly, they keep the cards. How many cards can they collect in 2 minutes?
