State why health and safety legislation is important Identify two health and safety laws Define hazards and risks Contribute to a risk assessment State the responsibilities people have for health and safety in the workplace List the steps to be taken in case of fire, accident and emergency

3 Health and Safety Legislation
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the main law. It lists the responsibilities of employers and employees for health and safety in the workplace.

4 Health and Safety Legislation
There are other laws that support health and safety. Some examples are: Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 RIDDOR (Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 1995) COSHH (Control of substances hazardous to health regulations 2002).

Leaving a mess Horseplay Using untested electrical equipment Not following procedures

7 Reducing risk in the workplace
Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other people at work Co-operate with your employers to help them to perform their duties or requirements under the law Follow the guidelines to deal with hazards and risks.

9 Dealing with Incidents/Emergencies
Report the accident/call emergency services Raise the alarm/call emergency services Evacuate the building Assemble at a designated point Provide care Make the area safe Don’t stop to get personal belongings Find out what happened
