9 So what exactly is religious music? It is music which expresses feelings about one’s religion and how their religion affects the way they think and feel about life.

10 Religious music: Public and Private Public – religious music can be public to help lead worship. Such as a choir in a church or a group of Buddhist monks chanting together. Music is also used for particular events such as weddings and funerals. Private – religious music can be private. Listening to music can help with meditation (Buddhists) and reflection within public worship or at home. Task: Explain how religious music is used in public and private worship.

11 Christianity Music can be used to assist worshippers in prayer and contemplation. It is also used to praise God through singing hymns. Hymns, many written a long time ago, unite the whole congregation of worshippers in confirming their beliefs and praising God. Some hymns include words of scripture put to music. In most Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, the words of worship have been modernised from 16 th century English to make them easier to understand.

12 Devotion Religious music is usually written to express deep spiritual feelings, often of love and devotion to God, and to help others share in those feelings and express their own devotion to God. Religious music such as hymns praise god and can inspire people to worship God. Revelation Some religious people believe that God is using them to reveal truths about himself through them and that this is why they are making music – to pass on Gods message to the rest of the world. Inspiration Someone might be inspired to make music because of the talent they have in composing music or singing. Or maybe because of a desire to share their feelings with others.
