2 Expanding Service Sector  Service Sector- part of the economy that provides services to the consumer  Fast food  Retail  Janitorial  Most of these jobs are part time or temporary

3 Temporary Workers  Temp workers lead to downsizing, reduce staff and streamline operations.  People were now working as freelance workers without benefits

4 Young Workers  In the 90’s 3 out of 4 young people expected to make less than their parents  In 1993 about 1 in 7 workers between ages 16-25 lacked a job.

5 Farms and Factories  Farms and Factories took a big hit during the 90’s  Jobs like steelmaking and auto building had automated machines building most of the materials.  This caused a decline in workers needed to be successful.  Union membership dropped drastically in the 90’s  More money more security  Less money scared to go on strike and lose job.

6 High Tech Jobs  In the mid 90’s more people were working high tech jobs.  These jobs paid as well if not better than those that worked in factories before.  Employers wanted workers who knew computers and technology.

7 Global Economy  International trade- leads to fear of job flight or jobs being taken to other countries that allow for cheaper labor.  International competition- fear of businesses taking advantage of countries who have less strict laws on production factories.

9 The Information Superhighway  A proposed computer communication network linking people and institutions across the nation and the world.  Internet- developed by the department of defense for research.  By 1996 24 million North Americans were using email.  Al Gore

10 Telecommunications Act of 1996  Allows for communications companies to provide their service to all areas of the nation.  The FCC (Federal Communication Commission) passed the Communications Decency act which prohibits certain things from being shared on the internet.  V-Chip in TVs so parents can restrict what their children can watch.

11 Technology Enriches Lives  Healthcare  MRI, prosthetics, and medicine  Genetic Engineering  Changing the genetic makeup of organisms.  Entertainment  Videogames, CD-ROMS, and virtual reality

12 Technology Enriches Lives  Education  Computers are used to link students to other students and internet info.  Transportation  Safer cars, airbags and seatbelts, GPS to get to places faster and easier  Space Exploration  Hubble Telescope takes photos of galaxies and stars.

13 Progress on the Environment  Recycling  Started recycling all kinds of materials  Cleaner Cars  Produce cars that run on batteries or clean energy.  Alternative Energy Sources  Move from fossil fuels to nuclear, wind, and solar.
