What you need  30 minutes of everyone’s time – time out for water. We know it’s difficult to get everyone together at the same time, but this presentation works better in groups and promotes group discussion and commitment from a team  Space to think without distraction  A computer with screen large enough for group to see or a projector  Pens and scrap paper for individuals to complete game and make notes  Refreshments – good old cup of tea to relax the group and kick start discussion  Diaries – to book a post presentation meeting to monitor how everyone has got on with their challenges and to celebrate the successes

Outline of training session  Explore water facts  Key areas of water wastage  Know your plumbing  Case studies relevant to your business  Action Stations - What you can do  Keeping up the momentum  Who can help Outcomes  Clearer understanding of water issues  All staff motivated to work together  Efficient use of resources  Reduce water waste  Satisfied customers & repeat business  Reduce environmental impacts of our business

Fact We use 70% more water today than we did 30 years ago. Are we more dirty, more thirsty or just more lazy?? 1977 2007

Why we should save water Water is a vital and valuable resource and we must use it responsibly. By taking positive action to control our water use we can:  Reduce costs  Preserve dwindling resources  Deliver environmental benefits  Be good neighbours

Put a plug in it “WHEN THE WELL IS DRY, WE ALL KNOW THE WORTH OF WATER” Benjamin Franklin

Key areas of water consumption …

Turning the tap off when cleaning your teeth saves 3600 litres a year. If everyone turned the tap off while cleaning their teeth we’d save enough water in a year to fill the millennium dome!!

Be a Water Detective 1.Draw a plan of the establishment 2.Identify different areas of the business – Office/front desk/activities centre/rooms/restaurant/coffee shop/caravan pitches 3.Make a list of the different ways that water is used in each area

What our detective found… General Leaks & drips Cleaning Bathrooms & washrooms Toilets & urinals Showers & baths Wash basins Kitchen Washing up Food preparation & cooking Laundry Outdoors Gardens Pools Vehicle Washing

Action - General  Report any leaks, dripping taps, running or overflowing toilet cisterns immediately and make sure that maintenance gets them fixed!  Don’t leave the taps running unnecessarily while you clean

Action - Kitchen  Wash up in a bowl of water  Don’t run the dishwasher until it is full – plan ahead  Clean vegetables in a bowl of water rather than under running water  Kettles – only fill with as much water as you need  Fill jugs of table water and chill them in the fridge  Don’t turn on water using appliances such as woks, steamers, peelers and waste disposal units unless and until you need to use them  Check the overflow on the ice machine

Action - Laundry  Wait until you have a full load before you run the washing machine  Choose economy settings and use the correct amount of detergent  Use the towel agreement cards provided free by South West tourism Towels in the bath or shower tray mean please change them

Action - Outside  Only water when needed and then water well  Water plants in the evening or early morning  Use a watering can instead of a hose pipe  Cut the grass less often and on a higher setting  Wash vehicles using a bucket  Sweep up and remove leaves and garden debris from paths, terraces, pool surrounds instead of cleaning with a hose pipe  Cover up  Don’t turn on then walk away

Management We have already begun to make savings in our water use by….

Measure to manage  Monitor water bills  Take regular meter readings Measuring our energy use will help us all:  Raise our general awareness of our water consumption  Identify potential problems that cost us money  Assess progress and performance of water saving actions  Allow us to set targets and compare our performance with others Don’t flush savings down the drain!

Action Stations  Form an water team  Establish current consumption and monitor  Prepare an action plan and timetable – a few things first – set realistic goals  Water policy  Consider guest communications: promote work internally via staff newsletters/intranet/emails/posters Keep up the momentum  Review – put a firm date in the diary for the next meeting  Report feedback from guests and staff  Assign new tasks  Recognise success

Case Study (south west water) A trickle feed urinal with a 6 litre cistern, flushing 4 times per hour, every hour of every day cost £682 a year to operate at current SWW charges for water & sewage. Installing a PIRS in a restaurant where the urinals were only in use during the evenings, and for weekend lunch time reduced the annual cost to £130.00. Savings = £552.00 The PIRS cost £130 plus installation – DIY easy, so pay back is almost instant.
